Saudi Oil Exports to India Reach Highest Levels Since 2020
Saudi Arabia’s oil exports to India are poised for the strongest monthly performance since 2020, according to data from Kpler as reported by Bloomberg. This surge comes as India faces increasing pressure from the United States to reduce its crude imports from Russia.
In recent weeks, Saudi oil shipments to India have surged to a daily average of between 1 million barrels and 1.1 million barrels, as noted by Kpler’s lead research analyst, Sumit Ritolia. This level of import is comparable to the rate at which India has been sourcing crude from Russia. Ritolia emphasized that this trend reflects Indian oil importers’ reluctance to significantly decrease their intake of Russian oil.
While Kpler estimates Russian oil exports to India at approximately 1.2 million barrels daily this month, making it the country’s largest oil supplier, this figure marks a decline. The rate of Russian imports previously surpassed 2 million barrels daily at various points over the past three years. Looking ahead, Kpler predicts that Russian oil exports to India could drop to between 800,000 barrels and 1 million barrels daily in March, indicating a potential shift in supplier dynamics.
Shifts in Global Oil Supply Chains
As Indian refiners increase their purchases of Saudi crude, there is a strong possibility that Saudi Arabia could surpass Russia as India’s primary oil supplier. This development highlights a crucial shift in global oil supply chains. The ongoing geopolitical situation has led to significant changes in buyer behavior, and Indian refiners are actively seeking alternatives to Russian oil.
Meanwhile, in a contrasting trend, China’s oil imports from Russia are on track to achieve record levels. February is expected to see Chinese imports exceed 2 million barrels per day, as Indian buyers scale back their spot purchases of Russian oil. Data from Vortexa and Kpler, as reported by Reuters, indicates that China is set to import between 2.07 million and 2.08 million barrels per day from Russia this month.
The contrasting approaches of India and China towards Russian oil imports illustrate the complexities of the current global energy market. As India navigates its relationship with Russia amidst external pressures, the evolving dynamics are likely to have lasting implications for international oil supply and demand.
In conclusion, as Saudi oil exports to India rise, the potential for Saudi Arabia to reclaim its position as India’s leading oil supplier becomes increasingly tangible. The interplay between geopolitical pressures and market forces will continue to shape the landscape of oil imports in the coming months.
