Vancouver’s Broadway Traffic Shift Raises Concerns for Commuters
Vancouver’s busy East Broadway will undergo significant traffic changes starting on January 26, 2024. The stretch between Main and Quebec streets will close to all vehicle traffic as part of the ongoing Broadway Subway Project. This closure has raised concerns among transit advocates, who warn that rerouting buses onto a narrower side street may lead to increased congestion and delays for thousands of commuters.
During the four-month closure, buses, including the heavily utilized 9 and 99 B-Line, which collectively account for approximately 46,000 trips on an average weekday, will be diverted to East 8th Avenue. According to Movement – Metro Vancouver Transit Riders, this rerouting could significantly impact bus speed and reliability.
Dennis Agar, executive director of the organization, expressed his concerns, stating, “Hundreds of buses a day are going to have to do this, and I’m pretty worried about how it’s gonna impact bus speed and reliability.” He noted that while some commuters might shift to the SkyTrain or alternative bus routes, many will remain reliant on the disrupted services. “We want to make sure that they’re not at a disadvantage by this whole thing,” Agar added.
Government Response and Traffic Management
The B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit indicated that the closure is essential to facilitate the reconstruction of the roadway above the future Mount Pleasant Station. By restricting vehicle access, the ministry aims to expedite the construction process. Following the initial closure, traffic will return to East Broadway, albeit with only one lane open in each direction for an additional four months.
TransLink, the regional transit authority, is collaborating with the City of Vancouver and the Broadway Subway Project team to minimize disruptions. They anticipate only minor delays and have implemented several measures, including bus queue jump lanes and signal priority for buses. Some bus stops will be temporarily relocated to further ease movement into travel lanes. Transit users are encouraged to plan ahead and allocate extra travel time during the construction period.
Impact on Local Businesses and Community Concerns
The detour is generating apprehension among business owners along East 8th Avenue, as they brace for an influx of buses and traffic. Dougie Stewart, owner of Colourstrings Conservatory of Music, expressed his worries regarding the anticipated congestion. “Parking spots are really tight here as it is, so that’s going to impact how people interact in the neighborhood,” he stated. Stewart lamented the lack of opportunities for local businesses to voice their concerns regarding the road closure and detour.
Since the inception of the Broadway Subway Project in late 2020, numerous businesses have reported declining sales and accessibility issues. Neil Wyles from the Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Association highlighted the long-term ramifications of the construction, stating, “For the best part of a year, these businesses are going to be highly inaccessible to their customer base.” He criticized the province for not providing sufficient support or relief measures during this challenging period.
The $2.83 billion subway extension project, initially slated for completion in 2023, is now delayed until at least fall 2027. In response to local concerns, the provincial project team has been conducting one-on-one meetings with business owners to discuss mitigation strategies.
Once completed, the 5.7-kilometre extension of the Millennium Line will add six new underground stations, fundamentally enhancing transit options in the region. However, as construction progresses, the immediate effects on commuters and local businesses remain a pressing issue for the community.
