WisdomTree’s DGRW ETF: Balancing Quality Growth with Dividend Concerns
The WisdomTree U.S. Quality Dividend Growth ETF, known as DGRW, has shown a commendable ability to deliver quality and growth in its investment strategy. However, the ETF’s dividend yield remains a concern, currently estimated at only 1.36%. This low yield raises questions about its long-term appeal, particularly as several high-profile mega-cap growth stocks dominate its portfolio.
An analysis reveals that DGRW has increased its overlap with the popular SPY ETF, now reaching 53%, a notable rise from 45% three years ago. This overlap suggests that investors may not be diversifying as much as they think when they choose DGRW alongside SPY. Despite its impressive long-term track record, matching SPY in downside risk-adjusted returns since June 2013, other funds like CGDV and SEIV have outperformed DGRW in the past few years.
While DGRW may still offer potential advantages in declining markets due to its growth-at-a-reasonable-price (GARP) characteristics, there is growing concern regarding its similarity to SPY. The diminishing benefits of holding both funds prompt a reevaluation of DGRW‘s attractiveness. In light of these factors, the recommendation for this ETF has been adjusted to a solid “hold.”
The last significant review of DGRW took place on March 19, 2024, where it was viewed as a suitable complement to SCHD, a low-growth, high-dividend ETF. Investors are advised to consider the changing landscape of dividend growth and quality funds, as the market continues to evolve.
In conclusion, while DGRW maintains a strong foundation in quality and growth, its low dividend yield and high correlation with SPY may limit its appeal for those seeking robust income. Careful consideration of alternatives like CGDV and SEIV is recommended for investors aiming for superior performance in rising markets.
