New classrooms have officially opened at Abbotsford Middle School in British Columbia, increasing student capacity by 200 seats. The addition of eight new classrooms is part of the province’s ongoing commitment to support the growing community as more families choose to settle in Abbotsford.

Bowinn Ma, the Minister of Infrastructure, highlighted the importance of this expansion, stating, “As more families choose Abbotsford, our schools must grow with them. These new classrooms ensure more students can learn closer to home, serving the community now and for years to come.” Construction for this two-storey addition began in spring 2025.

Investment in Education and Community Growth

The new classrooms are connected to the east side of the existing school building and include flexible collaboration spaces on each floor, along with an elevator, washrooms, and mechanical facilities. The project also features site upgrades, such as a new basketball court and playground, enhancing recreational options for students.

Minister of Education and Child Care, Lisa Beare, emphasized that “every student deserves access to safe, inspiring learning environments.” She noted that these new classrooms will help meet increasing demand and provide essential resources necessary for students and staff to thrive.

Since 2017, the provincial government has invested over $80 million to create more than 1,000 new student spaces in Abbotsford, including 750 seats designed to be seismically safer. This latest addition to Abbotsford Middle School received $12 million of that funding.

Additionally, for the 2025-26 school year, the Abbotsford school district has received more than $7 million through minor capital programs aimed at building maintenance, energy efficiency upgrades, and transportation improvements.

Community Support and Future Plans

Recent expansions at other local schools, such as Margaret Stenerson Elementary and Auguston Traditional Elementary, have also created space for new child care facilities on school grounds, further supporting families in the region.

Stan Petersen, Chair of the Abbotsford Board of Education, remarked, “This new addition at Abbotsford Middle School is a direct investment in our students’ and our community’s future. These new classrooms will support growing enrolment and ensure students have safe, modern spaces built to support their success for years to come.”

The provincial government’s commitment to education is evident, with over $6.6 billion allocated to schools since 2017. This includes nearly 46,500 new student spaces and more than 39,000 seismically safer seats across British Columbia.

As Abbotsford and other communities continue to grow, the government maintains its focus on working collaboratively with school districts and municipalities to ensure that all students have access to safe and modern learning environments.
