Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic School Board Achieves High Graduation Rates
The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) has achieved notable recognition for its graduation rates, ranking in the top 12 among 72 school boards in Ontario. This accomplishment is particularly significant as the ALCDSB stands fourth among all English-speaking school boards in the province, according to a recent news release.
This assessment derives from data collected by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) for the 2023-2024 academic year, alongside information from the Ontario School Information System (OSIS). The report indicates that the ALCDSB has consistently surpassed the provincial average for graduation rates over the past four years. Notably, the graduation rate for the 2020-2021 academic year was an impressive 91.4 percent.
Commitment to Student Success
Sonya Melim, the ALCDSB Superintendent of Education, emphasized the board’s dedication to supporting students who may be at risk of not graduating. She stated, “Through a tiered system of intervention and individualized programming, the board ensures that every student receives the support they need to achieve success.”
This commitment to fostering educational excellence is reflected in the board’s strategies, which aim to provide tailored assistance to each student. Melim expressed pride in the graduation rates, describing them as a testament to the diligent efforts made by educators to enhance student outcomes.
To earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, students must complete a total of 30 credits, which includes 17 compulsory courses and 13 electives. Additionally, students are required to pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, complete 40 hours of community service, and finish a minimum of two online credits.
The ALCDSB’s achievements signal a positive trend in educational outcomes and highlight the effectiveness of their supportive measures. As they continue to build on this success, the board aims to maintain its high standards and commitment to student achievement in the years ahead.
