Assiniboine College Launches $24M Medical Lab Project for Future Healthcare
Assiniboine College has announced the construction of a new medical lab facility, a project valued at over $24 million. This significant development will transform a long-closed mechanics shop at the Victoria Avenue East campus into modern classrooms, learning spaces, an auditorium, and various laboratories. The new facility aims to support two innovative programs set to commence in September 2027, focusing on medical laboratory technology and combined laboratory and X-ray technology.
The college will invest $10 million into the project, while the provincial government is contributing $9.13 million in capital funding. This includes approximately $4 million designated for equipment and $5 million allocated for construction. The remaining $5 million is expected to be raised through fundraising efforts by the college.
Investment in Healthcare Education
At a press conference held on Monday, Treena Slate, CEO of Prairie Mountain Health, emphasized the importance of this investment in addressing healthcare needs in rural Manitoba. “We cannot operate an emergency department without nurses, without trained lab and X-ray personnel and physicians,” Slate stated. She highlighted that specialized professions are essential for providing timely medical results, which are critical in emergency situations.
“This new learning space is not just an investment in facilities; it’s also an investment in people and communities, and in the long-term health and well-being of the region and the province,” she added, addressing a crowd of over 50 attendees.
Assiniboine College President Mark Frison noted the overwhelming interest in the new programs, with 650 individuals already expressing interest. “The programs we’re going to offer here will have a tremendous impact both locally and across the region,” he said, particularly highlighting the significance of the combined X-ray medical lab technology program.
Government Support and Future Prospects
Renée Cable, the province’s Advanced Education and Training Minister, affirmed the government’s commitment to improving healthcare. “These programs will help make that happen,” she remarked, referencing the NDP government’s promise to enhance health services. Cable acknowledged the challenges faced in the healthcare sector, stating, “We know that there’s a lot to do in health care, and it is a bit of a perfect storm.”
Both Frison and Cable expressed their anticipation for the first graduating class and the positive impact these graduates will have on healthcare access in Manitoba. The programs will consist of 20 seats each and will span two and a half years, featuring an integrated learning experience that includes practicum placements in rural communities.
The ongoing operational costs for delivering these programs are estimated to be between $2 million and $2.25 million annually.
Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett also voiced his support for the initiative. “This is fantastic. In particular, the rural regions are so desperate for this, and it’s great the province is backing it up,” he stated, underscoring the necessity for enhanced educational resources in the area.
The mechanics shop, which has remained largely unused since 2010, has previously served various purposes, including a drive-through COVID-19 testing site during the pandemic. The transformation into a medical lab facility represents a significant reinvestment in the community, aligning with both local and provincial goals for healthcare improvement.
With construction set to begin soon, the Assiniboine College project demonstrates a commitment to fostering healthcare education and addressing the urgent need for trained professionals in the region, paving the way for a healthier future for Manitoba.
