B.C. Announces New 465-Seat Francophone School in Saanich
The British Columbia government has unveiled plans to construct a new 465-seat francophone school in Saanich, expected to serve students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. This new facility aims to replace the existing École Beausoleil, which currently operates out of a temporary site at Braefoot Elementary and accommodates only 170 elementary students.
Located on the same property as Lansdowne Middle School, the new school will significantly enhance capacity, adding 295 new spots for students. The design includes 20 classrooms, along with dedicated spaces for child care and community programs. Notably, the school will feature a “low-carbon building design,” aligning with sustainability goals outlined by the provincial government.
Construction is anticipated to commence in fall 2027, with the provincial government contributing $73 million towards the project. “This new school will ensure francophone students can learn in a safe, modern environment that reflects their culture and community,” stated Bowinn Ma, B.C. Minister of Infrastructure.
The establishment of the new École Beausoleil will mark the second K-12 francophone school in the Greater Victoria area, joining École Victor-Brodeur in Esquimalt. This initiative is viewed as a substantial benefit to the francophone community in the region, providing families with more educational options.
“Our community sees this new school as much more than just a building: it represents a collective dream that has been a long time in the making,” remarked Marie-Pierre Lavoie, board chair of the Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique. She highlighted that the school symbolizes the resilience, pride, and commitment of generations of families and educators in Victoria. “We are sincerely grateful to the provincial government and proud to take this step together, which will enhance the vitality of French in British Columbia for years to come.”
Since 2017, the British Columbia government has invested nearly $300 million in francophone education infrastructure. This includes twelve new site acquisitions aimed at expanding educational opportunities for francophone students across the province. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to supporting diverse educational needs in British Columbia.
