Students, faculty, and community members gathered at Brandon University on March 9, 2024, for the annual Black History Month celebration organized by the Loy Excellentia Initiative. The event, now in its third year, centered on themes of leadership, mentorship, and community connection, drawing participants together to reflect on the significance of Black history in Canada.

The keynote address was delivered by Balfour Spence, a professor of applied disaster and emergency studies. His presentation, titled “Unraveling Canadian Black History: Acknowledging the Past and Mentoring the Future,” focused on the importance of understanding history through open dialogue across diverse backgrounds. Spence emphasized that Black history encompasses shared experiences shaped by cultural interactions.

“To chart a better future, it must be an outcome of interactions and collaboration between Black, white, brown, and Indigenous people,” Spence stated. He highlighted the diversity now present in Brandon, where he has lived for nearly 18 years, noting the increasing engagement of Black residents in various sectors, including education and business.

The event created a vital platform for connection, particularly for international students adapting to life in Canada. Uzodinma Chilaka, a master’s student in geography and environment, described the gathering as a valuable opportunity for migrants to network and share their experiences. “It’s always good for Africans to identify with one another, find ways to network, share culture, and bring out the best in each other,” he remarked.

The focus on social interaction resonated with attendees. Another student, Kenechukwu Arinzechi, noted that such events facilitate connections among international students navigating new environments. “The keynote address helped deepen my understanding of the history of Black communities in Canada,” he added.

Participation in the initiative has steadily grown since its inception, with increased involvement from students and community members. Founder Aloy Anyichie reflected on the challenges faced in the early stages: “When we started, it wasn’t that easy. We found it difficult getting students, but over the years, there has been a steady increase in participation.” This year, the event also featured contributions from the BU jazz band and support from local organizations, including the Rotary Club.

Anyichie emphasized the importance of encouraging students to take on leadership roles that will aid their integration into society post-graduation. “We want them to be more involved because it offers them the opportunity to learn to lead and develop soft skills that will help them connect with society and be useful when they graduate,” he explained. He believes that such initiatives prepare students to contribute effectively to society, enhancing the African community in Brandon and beyond.

Dean of the Faculty of Education, Alysha Farrell, praised the positive growth of the initiative under Anyichie’s leadership. She noted an increase in mentorship opportunities for Black students and faculty, reinforcing the idea that honoring Black history involves critically examining both past and present to forge a collaborative path forward.

The significance of the celebration was echoed by Wayne Balcaen, MLA for Brandon West, who remarked on the growing recognition of Black contributions within the community. “Black History Month should not just be celebrated one month or one day — it should be celebrated throughout the whole year,” he stated, highlighting the role of events like this in fostering unity and appreciation for diversity.

Ultimately, the Loy Excellentia Initiative’s Black History Month celebration not only commemorated the history of Black Canadians but also served as a catalyst for community engagement, leadership development, and cultural exchange, reinforcing the interconnectedness of all communities in Brandon.
