Brandon University Co-op Program Launches with Record 72 Students
Brandon University’s Co-operative Education Program kicked off its seventh season on March 14, 2024, with a record number of participants. This year, a total of 72 students have joined the initiative, aiming to gain valuable work experience that aligns with their career aspirations.
The launch event highlighted the growing interest among students in experiential learning, a trend that reflects both enthusiasm for real-world experience and confidence from local employers. The program director, Cora Dupuis, noted that this year’s cohort includes 50 new students and 22 returning participants, an increase of approximately 16 students from the previous year.
One of the students, Kendal Giesbrecht, a fifth-year chemistry major, shared the impact the program has had on her professional development. “It gave me some really important industry-relevant skills that I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to gain otherwise,” she said. Giesbrecht has secured positions at the Pfizer plant in Brandon and recently completed research in Dresden, Germany. She emphasized that without the co-op program, landing a role with such a significant company would have been unlikely.
The program not only facilitates job placements but also offers professional development workshops to prepare students for their work terms. Greg Gatien, acting provost and vice-president of Brandon University, expressed the importance of practical experience in enriching students’ education. “Our students are gaining experience that helps them further identify aspirations, gain confidence, connect with mentors, and acquire real-life skills,” he stated during the launch.
Another participant, Judith Okpe, a third-year accounting student, expressed her eagerness to gain real-world experience through the co-op program. “I learned a lot of stuff in school,” she said. “Let me apply them in a real-world work setting, and also just to connect with people.”
The event brought together a diverse audience, including alumni, new and returning students, as well as local politicians and business leaders. Former participant Dezarae Bodnar reflected on her journey through the co-op program, thanking Dupuis for her mentorship. “The structure of the co-op program helped me to recognize my own strengths and trust in her,” Bodnar noted.
Students at the launch were also offered opportunities to enhance their professional profiles with free headshots, further emphasizing the program’s commitment to supporting student success.
The enthusiasm surrounding the co-op program at Brandon University signals a vibrant partnership between the university and the community. As students prepare to embark on their co-op journeys, the program continues to foster connections that will shape their future careers.
