The Delta School District is prioritizing literacy as a vital component of its educational strategy, introducing new initiatives aimed at fostering reading skills among students. As part of its commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment, the district’s Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction Department has rolled out various resources designed to enhance literacy instruction.

Among the notable efforts is a comprehensive reading website that offers essential literacy tools tailored for elementary educators. Over **80 teachers** are currently engaged in a pilot program that focuses on phonics instruction, providing structured lesson plans specifically for Grade 1 and Grade 2 classrooms. These targeted approaches aim to improve early reading success by equipping students with foundational skills necessary for their literary development.

To further support students’ reading growth, the district is introducing assessments that measure specific abilities, such as word decoding. “We’re seeing an increase in curiosity from educators about new approaches to teaching reading,” said **Megan Sandham**, the district’s co-ordinator of primary learning. She emphasized the importance of phonics, explaining that when children encounter unfamiliar words, the ability to break them down phonetically significantly enhances their likelihood of recognizing those words in the future.

**Jason Hodgins**, the early learning co-ordinator, noted that while these phonics skills have always been taught, there is now a heightened focus on their importance. The district is committed to providing specific guidance and support that aligns with new assessment tools, recognizing the demanding workload faced by teachers. “We want to offer ready-to-use, impactful, and engaging activities to teach these skills based on assessment outcomes,” he stated.

A collaborative committee of teachers, principals, and district staff oversees this literacy initiative, and preliminary results indicate positive trends. Educators report that the new resources are instrumental in identifying student needs and customizing teaching approaches.

Looking forward, the **Ministry of Education and Child Care** intends to expand mandatory literacy screening for kindergarten students in the current school year to include grades 1 through 3. The district is also contemplating adjustments to its K-7 literacy strategies.

“Learning to read is hard work for students and teachers alike,” Sandham added. She emphasized the importance of making reading practice enjoyable and engaging. Parents who have concerns about their child’s reading progress are urged to communicate with their teachers early, as timely intervention can lead to better outcomes.

The district’s literacy commitment extends into high school, where educators are collaborating with **Tashi Kirincic**, the inclusive literacy practices co-ordinator. Kirincic recently completed a “Spiral of Inquiry,” a collaborative framework aimed at enhancing student learning through evidence-based practices. This initiative arose from concerns regarding declining reading abilities, the quality of student submissions, and diminishing stamina for reading.

“Teachers had many hunches about the causes — such as increased screen time and a lack of direct reading instruction in earlier grades — but were uncertain how to respond,” Kirincic remarked.

Through this focused inquiry, Kirincic partnered with science educators to explore how minor adjustments in teaching practices, such as previewing texts and summarizing lessons, could bolster students’ reading skills. Feedback from both students and teachers confirmed that integrating literacy strategies into science coursework positively impacted student engagement and understanding.

“This inquiry was a first step in exploring how literacy practices can support learning,” Kirincic explained. She aims to deepen collaboration across the district, enhancing collective understanding of how literacy can improve educational outcomes. By embedding relevant and straightforward strategies into everyday teaching, the district hopes to strengthen its students’ literacy skills and overall learning experience.
