Kankakee Community College (KCC) has been awarded a grant of $44,000 from the Illinois Community College Board to enhance its English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. This funding aims to provide additional resources for adult learners, particularly in underserved areas of the district. The initiative will introduce new citizenship classes along with two additional ESL classes.

Currently, KCC offers ESL classes in Kankakee, Bradley, and Momence. With the new grant, the college will extend its services to include Watseka and Pembroke. This expansion is designed to improve access for communities that have previously faced educational barriers.

Shannan Carrell, the director of Adult and Community Education at KCC, expressed optimism about the grant’s impact. She noted that “this grant will support programming to increase English proficiency, strengthen basic skills, promote family and employment stability, and help adult learners achieve self-sufficiency.” This comprehensive approach aims to equip students with essential language skills that can enhance their employment opportunities and overall quality of life.

The funding is part of a competitive grant process in which seven Illinois colleges received financial support. This funding reflects a commitment to improving educational resources for adult learners across the state.

For those interested in more information about the ESL programs, KCC encourages inquiries through their website, www.kcc.edu/esl, or by contacting Margarita Buzzell, the coordinator of ESL Enrollment & Retention, at [email protected] or by phone at 815-802-8303.

The expansion of these ESL classes represents a significant step toward inclusivity and educational support for diverse populations in the region, ensuring that more individuals have the opportunity to improve their language skills and integrate into the community effectively.
