New Elementary School to Open in Tottenham with $20.2 Million Investment
A new elementary school will be established in Tottenham, located on McGahey Street in the northeast region of the town. The initiative, announced on December 18, 2023, by Brian Saunderson, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Simcoe-Grey, aims to create 426 elementary school spaces to meet the growing educational needs of the community.
The project is part of a broader strategy by the provincial government to invest $20.2 million in the new school, contributing to an ambitious plan to allocate $23 billion over the next ten years for school construction and improvements across Ontario. Paul Calandra, Minister of Education, emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, “By building and expanding schools across the province, we’re making sure students can learn in modern, high-quality environments that support strong achievement.”
Currently, Tottenham is served by two elementary schools: Tottenham Public School on Rogers Road and Father F.X. O’Reilly Catholic School on Queen Street. The new facility is expected to alleviate some of the pressures on these existing schools as the local population continues to grow.
Over the past two years, the Ontario government has committed approximately $1.3 billion annually for new school buildings, additions, and renovations, marking the highest level of school capital funding in the province’s history. This funding is crucial for ensuring that educational facilities can keep pace with demographic changes and the evolving needs of students.
In response to the announcement, MPP Saunderson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The funding for a new Tottenham Elementary School is welcome news for our local community. Through this investment, we’re creating opportunities for students to thrive today and well into the future.”
The Ministry of Education also plans to provide $1.4 billion to school boards for the 2025-26 school year to further support the renewal and improvement of educational facilities. Dawn Stephens, Director of Education for the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB), welcomed the announcement, noting, “This is exciting news for students and families in New Tecumseth and will certainly ensure that SCDSB students continue to have the opportunity to learn and grow in their community.”
The SCDSB has prepared a strong business case for the new school, which included identifying a shovel-ready site. This positions the board to begin construction on the project in 2026. With this new school, Tottenham aims to enhance its educational infrastructure, providing a modern environment conducive to learning and personal development for its students.
As the community prepares for this significant investment, the establishment of the new elementary school represents a commitment to fostering an educational landscape that supports the needs of families in the region.
