Odell Public Library Engages Community with February Celebrations
The Odell Public Library in Morrison is celebrating National Library Lovers Month throughout February with a variety of engaging programs and activities for the community. This initiative emphasizes the library’s commitment to providing access to learning spaces, digital resources, and opportunities for social interaction.
Odell Public Library offers a host of programs designed to cater to diverse interests, including story times, Lego and Pokémon clubs, and various game sessions featuring chess and Scrabble. In addition to borrowing books and digital media, patrons can enjoy reading by the fireplace, utilizing tech services, and participating in tabletop games.
Winter presents an ideal opportunity to explore the library’s digital offerings. Through the Libby and Palace apps, library members can access thousands of e-books and audiobooks with just a few clicks. Users can browse by title, genre, or age group, ensuring there is something for everyone, from graphic novels to western romance. For those who prefer physical copies, the library can borrow materials from over 140 libraries across Illinois at no cost.
Programs and Activities for All Ages
One of the highlights of February is the weekly story time, held every Thursday evening. This 30-minute drop-in session welcomes families with preschool and early elementary-aged children, providing engaging stories, songs, rhymes, and a craft each week. The upcoming themes include “Winter Sleep” on February 19 and “Cats” on February 26. Pajamas are encouraged to make the experience even more cozy and inviting.
The Lego Club meets on the first Saturday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to noon, offering a creative outlet for builders of all ages. The library supplies a variety of building materials, including Lego, Duplo, and MegaBlok. Participants’ creations will be displayed until the next meeting, fostering a sense of community among young builders.
Fans of Pokémon can join the Pokémon Club on the second Saturday of the month from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. This gathering allows enthusiasts to play, trade, and share their knowledge about Pokémon, creating a welcoming environment for both newcomers and seasoned fans. All programs are free and open to the public, and beginners are always welcome.
Engaging Events and Community Support
In addition to regular programming, the library hosts various game sessions, including Pinochle on Mondays, Scrabble on Wednesdays, and chess on specified Mondays and Thursdays. Crafters are invited to bring their projects and socialize every Thursday evening in the Genealogy Room. Moreover, a book club meets on the second Thursday of the month, with this month’s reading selection being “The Seventh Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.”
On February 26, the library will host a Zoom chat with author Nico Lang at 7:00 p.m. This event will explore themes from Lang’s work, which delves into the lives of eight teenagers navigating their formative years. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link, and books will be available at several nearby libraries, including Dixon, Sterling, and Rock Falls.
The Odell Public Library Friends group is actively seeking new members to support library initiatives through fundraising, advocacy, and programming. Interested individuals can reach out via email at [email protected] or attend the next meeting at 1:00 p.m. on March 3 in the Odell Program Room.
Additionally, the library offers passes to local attractions such as the Putnam Museum and Niabi Zoo for adult library cardholders, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Odell is also cultivating fresh produce, including broccoli and kale, available for patrons to sample.
Odell Public Library is located at 307 S. Madison St. in Morrison. As February unfolds, the library continues to provide valuable resources and engaging programs, reinforcing its role as a vital community hub.
