Okanagan Students Showcase Skills in Regional Competition
Hundreds of students gathered at Okanagan College in Kelowna, British Columbia, on February 20, 2026, to participate in the Skills Canada BC Central Okanagan Regional Competition. This annual event showcased the talents of young competitors in various fields, including sumo bots, welding, cooking, automotive services, and carpentry. The top performers aim to advance to the provincial competition scheduled for April 15 in Abbotsford.
Among the participants was Mielle Tetreau, a Grade 8 student from Canyon Falls Middle School. Competing in junior carpentry, Tetreau stood out as the only female contestant in her category. “It’s kind of really honouring,” she remarked, sharing that her interest in carpentry began through a school enrichment program. Encouraged by her teacher, Tetreau decided to enter the competition. “I feel really happy to be included in this,” she added.
The event aimed to inspire the next generation of trades and technology leaders. Caitlin Hartigan, a board member of Skills Canada BC and Dean of Trades at Okanagan College, expressed pride in the program’s ability to foster future talent, particularly among young women. “It’s important for confidence building, especially for young girls,” Hartigan stated. She emphasized the value of hands-on training and opportunities to engage in diverse careers beyond traditional paths.
The competition attracted a diverse group of participants, demonstrating the growing interest in trades and technology among youth. As students tackled various challenges, they not only developed practical skills but also built confidence and camaraderie with peers. Events like this play a crucial role in shaping the future workforce and addressing skills shortages in critical industries.
