Oswego School District 308 Unveils Comprehensive Facility Improvement Plan
Oswego School District 308 has approved a comprehensive plan to address its pressing facility needs. The school board’s decision introduces a long-range strategy divided into three key phases: facility condition assessment, educational alignment, and long-range facility planning. This initiative comes in response to significant population growth in the Oswego area during the early 2000s, which led to many schools being constructed around the same time and now requiring essential updates to systems such as HVAC, roofing, and flooring.
The district serves areas within Kendall, Will, and Kane counties. Notably, approximately 80% of the district’s buildings were built between 1995 and 2010. According to architectural and engineering firm Wight & Company, the district has maintained its facilities well, with no buildings currently deemed in critical condition.
In developing this plan, the school district engaged the community through a series of meetings designed to gather input on facility needs. Board member Amy Murillo expressed satisfaction with the level of community engagement, stating, “I’ve been very happy with the engagement activities around this plan and how much input we got from the community about what they wanted to see in our facilities over the years.” Murillo emphasized the next step will involve prioritizing the proposed initiatives based on available resources.
Board Vice President Heather Martin echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of having a structured framework to guide the district’s future. “This plan gives us a roadmap to follow,” she stated.
A significant aspect of the plan is the educational alignment phase, which focuses on improving the learning environments in tandem with the district’s strategic goals. Stuart Brodsky, a principal with Wight & Company, explained this concept during a facility planning workshop at Murphy Junior High School. He stated that educational alignment involves assessing what is necessary to better integrate both interior and exterior learning environments with the district’s strategic objectives.
The plan proposes several enhancements for various buildings within the district. These include modernizing administrative spaces at Murphy Junior High, upgrading science laboratories at Oswego High School, and expanding student parking facilities at Oswego East High School.
For those seeking further details about this plan, the district has made additional information available on its official website at sd308.org. The initiative represents a proactive approach to ensuring that the district’s facilities meet the evolving needs of its student population and educational goals.
