Reflecting on Community Growth and Challenges in Nelson
In her latest column, Donna Macdonald reflects on her experiences and observations in Nelson over the past year, highlighting the city’s ongoing community development and challenges. Macdonald, who has lived in Nelson since 1972, emphasizes the importance of local engagement and storytelling in fostering a sense of community.
Looking Back at 2023
Macdonald began her column as a project during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to explore Nelson on foot and share its stories. The column, titled “About Nelson,” serves as a reminder that the city is the result of over a century of community effort. While she sometimes questions the impact of her writing, the appreciation expressed by residents reassures her of its value.
In January, she addressed the future of the Granite Pointe Golf Club, which is set to open in 2026 amid ongoing discussions about the Hallo Nelson project, which includes plans for a new golf course, housing units, and commercial spaces. Despite a year of little visible progress, Macdonald remains hopeful for the community’s development.
February took Macdonald to Gyro Park, where she pondered the symbolism of the gyroscope, representing balance and stability amid external pressures. This reflection ties into her broader observations about the need for central values to maintain community resilience.
Community Initiatives and Challenges
The year continued with significant events, including the passing of former councillor and mayor Bill Ramsden. Macdonald noted his leadership style, characterized by listening and cooperation, contrasting it with current debates over land use for recreation versus affordable housing.
In May, she shared insights from a personal project of decluttering her home, emphasizing the importance of resource recovery and the Zero Waste initiative. The process proved rewarding as she found new homes for items rather than discarding them.
June brought a positive highlight with the success of the Community First Health Co-op, which embodies a community-first approach to healthcare. This success story reflects the spirit of collaboration and dedication in Nelson.
In July, Macdonald explored the underutilization of the city parkade, discussing potential improvements with former mayor Gerald Rotering. Feedback from residents revealed a lack of awareness about the facility, prompting further inquiry into its usage.
September saw the Osprey Community Foundation celebrate its 25th anniversary with a fundraising campaign. Initially skeptical of reaching their goal of $75,000, Macdonald was pleasantly surprised when the foundation exceeded expectations, raising $86,000, matched by the local credit union.
November’s column addressed the serious issue of violence against women, highlighting the crucial work of Nelson’s Aimee Beaulieu Transition House. Following her piece, Macdonald received messages from friends directing their charitable giving to the shelter, illustrating the impact of raising awareness on community issues.
As she reflects on 2023, Macdonald concludes that nothing should be taken for granted. She hopes the community can hold onto its core values and remain steadfast amid challenges. Her closing remarks express gratitude for the support from her readers and optimism for the future of Nelson.
With a history of engagement and service, Donna Macdonald continues to be a voice for the community, advocating for progress and awareness in Nelson as it navigates the complexities of growth and change.
