Saugeen District Students Gear Up for Southern Ontario Model UN
Saugeen District Senior School (SDSS) announced that twelve students will represent the institution at the Southern Ontario Model United Nations Assembly (SOMA) in Toronto, Ontario, in March 2024. This opportunity was made possible through generous contributions from the Port Elgin Rotary Club, the Southampton Rotary Club, and prize money from the recent Nuclear Innovation Institute competition.
Community Support Fuels Student Participation
The financial backing from local Rotary clubs has been instrumental in facilitating the students’ attendance. Ken McCulloch from the Port Elgin Rotary, along with Dave Bertrand and MaryEllen Higgins from the Southampton Rotary, presented funds to assist with necessary travel and accommodation expenses. Without this community support, attending SOMA would have been a significant challenge due to the costs associated with long-distance travel from Saugeen Shores to Toronto.
SOMA is recognized as one of Ontario’s premier student conferences, providing an engaging platform for young delegates to engage in high-level debate, diplomacy, and global problem-solving. Participants represent various countries, drafting resolutions and addressing complex international issues that require collaboration and critical thinking.
Previous Success Sets Stage for Future Achievements
The SDSS delegation has already showcased their skills by securing first place at the Nuclear Innovation Institute Model UN conference. This achievement highlights their dedication, preparation, and teamwork, all of which will be essential as they tackle new challenges at SOMA.
Participation in Model United Nations events such as SOMA equips students with invaluable skills, including leadership development, public speaking, and a heightened awareness of global issues. These experiences extend beyond academic learning, preparing students for future roles in leadership and civic engagement.
SDSS expresses its sincere gratitude to the Port Elgin Rotary Club, the Southampton Rotary Club, and the Nuclear Innovation Institute for their unwavering commitment to supporting youth, education, and community leadership. With their assistance, these talented students will proudly represent SDSS and the Saugeen Shores community on a provincial stage.
