School District 46, located on the Sunshine Coast, has announced a comprehensive Inclusion Review aimed at enhancing support for all learners. The initiative was unveiled during the Board of Education meeting held on December 10, 2023, and was detailed in Superintendent Kate Kerr’s monthly report.

Review Aims to Strengthen Inclusive Education Practices

The Inclusion Review will scrutinize how inclusive education is implemented throughout the district. Superintendent Kerr emphasized that the review seeks to ensure that current practices reflect up-to-date evidence, effectively utilize resources, and provide consistent, high-quality experiences for students, families, and staff.

This evaluation will cover various aspects, including systems, processes, resource allocation, and policies that pertain to inclusive education. Additionally, it aims to align with the guidelines set forth in the Ministry of Education and Child Care’s recently updated Inclusive Education Services manual, while taking into account local needs and contexts.

To facilitate this process, the district has engaged Rick Ryan, a former deputy superintendent of the Richmond School District, as a consultant. Superintendent Kerr noted, “Rick brings extensive experience in district leadership, system planning, counselling, and inclusive education.”

Trustees Seek Timelines for Implementation

During the board meeting, trustees expressed curiosity regarding the timeline for the review’s findings. Superintendent Kerr explained that the process is still in its initial stages, requiring significant research and analysis. “We will have more information as the months go by,” she stated. “I would think we’d be able to bring something back, certainly, even in an informal update in a few months.”

Kerr reiterated the district’s commitment to excellence in inclusive education, stating, “We know we do excellent work with inclusive education. And I think it’s really important that we’re constantly looking at how we can keep transforming, keep doing even better with our practices.”

This initiative signifies the district’s dedication to fostering a more inclusive environment for all students, ensuring that educational practices evolve to meet diverse learning needs. As the review progresses, updates will be shared with the community to maintain transparency and engagement.
