The University of Victoria (UVic) is welcoming students back for the start of the academic term with a strong emphasis on health and well-being. In a message to students, Jim Dunsdon, Associate Vice-President of Student Affairs, encouraged individuals to prioritize their mental and physical health as they transition into the new year. This message comes as students return from winter break, presenting an opportunity to engage with campus resources.

Exploring Campus Resources for Health and Wellness

As the term begins, students are encouraged to explore the various services available at UVic designed to support their health and wellness. The Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA) offers memberships, intramural sports, and a wide range of recreational programs for those interested in staying active. For academic assistance, the university provides numerous supports to help students manage their course loads effectively.

Engagement with the campus community is also highlighted, with numerous events scheduled for the upcoming term. Students can attend Vikes games, concerts, and performances, and are urged to check the UVic Events Calendar for additional activities that may pique their interest. Key events include those organized by the University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS) and the Graduate Students’ Society (GSS), such as Clubs & Course Union Days, Hot Lunch, and Pancake Breakfasts.

Cultures of Care Week and Mental Health Support

From February 9 to 13, 2026, UVic will host the Cultures of Care Week, focusing on wellness, consent, community, and support. This initiative aims to foster connections among students and enhance their understanding of care in various contexts, including their relationships and within the campus community.

For those seeking mental health support, the Student Wellness Centre offers both same-day and pre-booked appointments with counselors. Additionally, SupportConnect provides 24/7 access to free and confidential mental health support. Students can also access harm reduction resources, including safer substance use information, through the Student Wellness Harm Reduction webpage and the UVSS Safer Use webpage.

Free naloxone training sessions are scheduled over the next few months, and a harm reduction workshop will take place on January 13, 2026, from 17:00 to 18:30 at the Student Wellness Centre. This workshop will cover essential topics, including harm reduction supplies and substance use health basics.

In case of emergencies, students are reminded to call 9-1-1 and then contact Campus Security at 250-721-7599. Campus Security operates around the clock and can help connect students with necessary resources. The UVic Safety App is available for quick access to security services and alerts. The Campus Security building also provides harm reduction supplies, including naloxone and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). AEDs and opioid emergency kits can be found in various campus locations.

As students embark on this new term, the University of Victoria aims to ensure they have the support and resources needed for a healthy, safe, and enjoyable academic experience.
