The Yorkville Public Library is set to engage children this winter break with an array of hands-on activities, storytimes, and creative programs throughout December. These offerings are designed to inspire creativity and foster a love for reading among young patrons.

Hands-On Activities and Creative Learning

One of the standout events is the Escape Room Adventure, which challenges families to solve clues and unlock boxes within a 30-minute time frame. Interested participants can schedule an appointment by contacting the Youth Service Department at 630-553-4354 ext 108.

For those inclined toward technology, the library will host a virtual 3D Printing session led by Leah English. Participants will learn to utilize Tinkercad, an accessible 3D CAD design tool. After creating their designs, individuals can submit their objects for printing at a cost of $0.20 per gram. The library’s YouTube channel will feature a step-by-step tutorial to guide users through the process.

Every Friday at 10:30 a.m., the library invites families to join its Drop-In Story Time, where a volunteer from The Friends of the Library will read engaging tales to children.

The Winter Read Challenge, running from December 1 to February 28, encourages reading through a fun tracking system. Each child who participates receives a set of mythical creature playing cards, with additional cards earned for every 120 minutes read.

Engaging Programs for All Ages

The library has scheduled a variety of programs tailored for different age groups. The Mommy and Me Yoga sessions on December 2 and 16 at 10:30 a.m. will combine yoga with storytelling, allowing caregivers and children to bond while promoting physical activity.

A book club for children in grades 1-2 will meet on December 20 at 9:30 a.m.. Participants will read and discuss “Dodsworth in London” by Tim Egan over two sessions. Registration for this club is available on the library’s website.

For LEGO enthusiasts, the library will offer themed kits from December 8-13. Children can drop by during open hours to create with provided bricks, with their creations displayed in the library afterward.

Other notable events include the Spanish Storytime on December 10 at 1:00 p.m., hosted on the library’s Facebook page, and a lively Family Trivia Night on the same day at 6:00 p.m. Families can form teams to compete in answering questions about holiday-themed topics.

The library’s regular operating hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Curbside service remains available for those who prefer to enjoy library resources without entering the building. It is important to note that the library will be closed on December 24, 25, and 31.

As the holiday season approaches, the Yorkville Public Library continues to provide enriching experiences that promote literacy and community engagement for families. These programs not only entertain but also encourage learning and creativity among children of all ages.
