Alberta Government Invests $59 Million to Enhance Cardiac Care

The Government of Alberta has announced a significant investment of $59 million over three years to enhance cardiac care and intensive care services in southern Alberta. This funding will be allocated to both the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge and the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. Premier Danielle Smith emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve the province’s healthcare system.

“Since we first announced our plans to refocus health care in late 2023, we have been expanding capacity, cutting waste, and sending more resources to the front line where they matter most,” Smith stated. She highlighted the urgency of cardiac care, noting the critical nature of heart-related illnesses. “Any illness involving the heart is a race against time,” she remarked. Smith added, “The very last thing a patient needs is a long journey to a bigger, far away centre for treatment or diagnostic testing.”

The Premier pointed out that Chinook Regional Hospital serves over 150,000 residents in Lethbridge and surrounding areas. “It’s been clear to our government that more capacity is needed both here in Lethbridge and throughout the region. That’s why we previously announced funding for a catheterization lab here at Chinook Regional Hospital and to begin planning for a Medicine Hat urgent care centre,” she explained.

Alberta’s Finance Minister Nate Horner reinforced the importance of this investment, stating that it aligns with the government’s priorities for the upcoming Budget 2026. “Budget 2026 is built around clear priorities: improving health care, supporting education, and strengthening Alberta’s economy for the long term,” Horner said. He emphasized that enhancing intensive care and diagnostic capacity in both Lethbridge and Medicine Hat will provide Albertans with the specialized care they need closer to home.

The upgrade of cardiac and intensive care services is expected to improve health outcomes for residents, particularly in emergency situations.
