Gomes was among the crowd at the Rogers Centre that night, having won tickets through the Rogers Beyond The Seat giveaway. Unfortunately, he fell ill and watched the end of the decisive game from a hospital bed at SickKids Hospital. His absence during Springer’s three-run homer, which propelled the Blue Jays into the World Series, left a gap in what should have been a joyous experience.

The past 18 months have been especially difficult for Gomes, who has been in and out of hospitals due to an undiagnosed illness. Once an active gymnast, he now relies on a wheelchair. “When a child should just be worrying about kicking a ball or who’s going to be meeting them at recess, Michael has bigger worries,” said his mother, Ariel Gomes. “When you find moments like this, you cling on to them so much because the joy that it brings Michael… it’s priceless.”

Notably, the idea that one should never meet their heroes did not apply in this case. Recently, Gomes was invited to the Sportsnet studios, where he had the chance to watch the replay of the iconic home run with Springer himself. The moment was heartwarming, as Gomes, with wide eyes, asked, “Can I have a hug?” to which Springer warmly replied, “Absolutely, you can have a hug.”

The reunion was not only impactful for Gomes but also for Springer, who expressed the importance of bringing joy to others. “To be able to provide happiness, that means a lot,” he said. “All the hard work, all the time spent away from your family, to have a moment like this with a special man here, it means the world to me.”

The emotional encounter was a significant moment for both Gomes and his family. “Having this moment is full circle; it’s something that Michael will never forget, and our family will never forget,” Ariel shared.
