Flu Outbreak Strikes Saskatchewan, Urgent Call for Vaccination Campaign

The province of Saskatchewan is experiencing a significant outbreak of Influenza A, particularly affecting young individuals under the age of 19. Current statistics reveal that nearly half of the reported cases involve this age group, while several long-term care facilities are grappling with their own outbreaks. The New Democratic Party (NDP) is urging the government to implement an emergency public campaign to encourage flu vaccination, citing that hospitals are currently overwhelmed.

Meara Conway, the NDP’s Health Shadow Minister, expressed grave concerns about the state of healthcare in Saskatchewan. “Healthcare in Saskatchewan has never been in this bad of shape,” Conway stated. “One thing we can do right here and right now is take steps to bolster prevention so we can take pressure off hospitals and health clinics.” She is calling for Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party to actively promote the benefits of flu shots, especially given the dismal vaccination rate of approximately 20 percent.

As of December 13, 2023, the positivity rate for Influenza A has surged to about 40 percent, with the main strain this year being particularly severe. Surveillance reports from the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) indicate that Influenza A cases rose by 13.5 percent in the first half of December alone. School absenteeism has also increased, reaching 17.8 percent for the week ending December 13, compared to 15 percent the previous week and 12 percent the week before that.

The healthcare system is under strain, with 127 individuals hospitalized and 13 in intensive care as of mid-December. The NDP noted that Saskatchewan is the only province where flu activity is classified as widespread. Conway emphasized the urgency of the situation, referencing recent fatalities in Ontario, where three children died from the flu. “This can be a matter of life and death — influenza is no joke,” she warned.

In addition to the impact on young people, outbreaks have been reported in multiple long-term care homes. Facilities such as the Paradise Path and Lakeland Trail locations of the Herb Bassett Home in Prince Albert are currently experiencing flu outbreaks. Other affected facilities include the Red Deer Nursing Home in Porcupine Plain and Chateau Providence in St. Brieux. Mont St. Joseph – Unit 1 also has a respiratory outbreak, with its source currently unknown.

Before the holiday season, the NDP released alarming data regarding emergency wait times in Saskatchewan hospitals, indicating wait periods of up to 41 hours in some areas. The provincial government has disputed these figures, suggesting they have been misinterpreted.

Despite the holiday festivities, the situation remains critical. Conway reiterated the need for an emergency plan to address the ongoing crisis in healthcare facilities, stating, “I get that it’s the holidays, but all is not calm, all is not bright — so the government needs to stop being silent.” As the flu continues to spread, the call for increased vaccination efforts becomes ever more pressing.
