Health Sciences North Appoints New Leadership Team Amid Change
The boards of Health Sciences North (HSN) and the Health Sciences North Research Institute (HSNRI) have appointed David McNeil as the new president and CEO of both institutions, alongside the promotion of Dr. Pankaj Bhatia to chief of staff at HSN. The announcement was made on Tuesday, marking a significant leadership transition for the health organization.
David McNeil, who has spent 28 years at HSN, including over two decades in various executive roles, returns after five years as the CEO of Brant Community Health Care in southwestern Ontario. He succeeds Dominic Giroux, who departed in June to assume the role of CEO at Hôpital Montfort in Ottawa. Board chair Stéphan Plante praised McNeil, stating, “David personifies excellence and is an expert on the challenges and opportunities facing health care in northeastern Ontario.”
Leadership Experience and Vision
McNeil holds a Bachelor of Science in nursing, a Master’s in health administration, and a PhD in rural and northern health. His career began in 1991 as a staff nurse in the James Bay community of Attawapiskat. In a news release, he expressed his enthusiasm for returning to HSN, noting, “It is known provincially as an institution of health care excellence and a place of tremendous opportunity for those working in the sector.”
McNeil’s extensive background positions him well to lead HSN through its upcoming strategic planning process. His experience is expected to drive innovation and address the evolving needs of the community.
Dr. Bhatia’s New Role
Dr. Pankaj Bhatia has been a part of HSN for 12 years, most recently serving as the medical director of the HSN simulation lab. He has been promoted to chief of staff, taking over from Dr. John Fenton. Plante remarked on Bhatia’s qualifications, stating, “He has a strong interest in continuous quality improvement as it pertains to health care delivery and is sensitive to the unique cultural needs of our northern Ontario communities.”
Bhatia holds a degree from the University of Western Ontario and is recognized for his commitment to education and mentoring. He has played an integral role at NOSM University as an associate professor and program director of the general surgery residency program. In his new position, Bhatia will collaborate closely with medical staff and administration to ensure quality and safe medical care for patients.
Both appointments received unanimous approval from the boards of HSN and HSNRI. With significant changes on the horizon, the timing of these leadership transitions is seen as pivotal for the organization as it seeks to enhance health services in the region.
