Langford Offers FireSmart Drop-Off for Hazardous Vegetation
Residents of Langford, British Columbia, have a valuable opportunity to enhance fire safety in their community through a series of FireSmart drop-off events. The City of Langford will host three pop-up depots for residents to dispose of hazardous vegetation on March 7, 14, and 21, 2025. This service is free and aims to assist homeowners in reducing wildfire risks.
The drop-off locations will be at 2955 Sooke Lake Road, open from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on each of the designated Saturdays. Staff and volunteers will monitor the site to ensure safe and appropriate use, helping to facilitate the removal of fire-hazard materials. Those looking to participate can find more information regarding acceptable materials on the Langford website at Langford.ca/Wildfire.
Langford’s FireSmart initiative has seen significant community engagement in the past. In November 2025, nearly 450 residents participated in a similar three-weekend program, resulting in the collection of approximately 135 tonnes (or 360 cubic yards) of hazardous vegetation. This successful event underscores the community’s commitment to wildfire prevention.
Simon Chadwick, Assistant Chief of Langford Fire Rescue, expressed satisfaction with the community’s involvement in prior drop-off events. “By proactively managing their properties, residents are also contributing to the reduction of wildfire risk throughout the community,” he stated. This proactive approach is essential in areas where the urban-wildland interface presents ongoing challenges.
The initiative is supported by a $200,000 grant received by the City of Langford, aimed at enhancing wildfire mitigation efforts. Funds from this grant will not only facilitate the upcoming drop-off depots but also support FireSmart educational workshops, further empowering residents to protect their properties.
Langford Fire Rescue has worked diligently to develop a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan, which outlines strategies to address wildfire risks in the region. The upcoming FireSmart drop-off events represent a significant step in fostering community awareness and resilience against potential fire hazards.
For those interested in participating, the drop-off events serve as an opportunity to contribute to a safer environment while also enhancing individual property safety. Residents are encouraged to prepare their yard waste ahead of time, taking care to follow recommended guidelines for handling wet leaves and other materials.
As the region continues to face wildfire threats, initiatives like these play a crucial role in safeguarding communities and promoting proactive fire management strategies.
