The community of Fort St. James has welcomed the opening of the Dadzi Wellness Centre, a new facility dedicated to holistic healing rooted in the principles of the Dakelh culture. This centre serves as a First Nations Primary Care Centre (FNPCC) and is part of the First Nations-led Primary Care Initiative (FNPCI). It aims to create an environment that merges traditional Indigenous healing practices with modern medical approaches.

At the Dadzi Wellness Centre, patients will undergo a comprehensive assessment that includes inquiries beyond their immediate health issues. The approach takes into account various factors such as medical history, family background, addictions, and work environment. This thorough evaluation is designed to provide a more complete understanding of a patient’s needs before commencing any treatment.

Creating a Warm, Welcoming Space

The design of the wellness centre emphasizes a warm and inviting atmosphere, aiming to contrast with the often sterile environment of conventional hospitals. The interior showcases art and decor that reflect the local Indigenous community, fostering a sense of belonging for those who seek care.

Donald Prince, the operations director, expressed the centre’s mission: “People can know when they come here, they know they’re going to get their care and they’re going to get their needs met as opposed to, here’s a pill and see you later sort of thing.” The logo of the centre features a loon, which holds significant meaning as a symbol of traditional healing within Dakelh teachings.

Labels around the centre are presented in the Dakelh language, enhancing cultural representation. For instance, the waiting room is referred to as “huba ts’ilh-i,” which means “where we wait for them.” The occupational therapy room is named “n yunch ‘oh hoont’ i nla tinilh,” translating to “they help you become happy.” Additionally, the private touchdown room is designated as “dich’oh neni hunuzut-un,” meaning “the place to give your mind a rest.”

Holistic Services and Community Involvement

In addition to traditional healing methods, the Dadzi Wellness Centre plans to provide language classes and other cultural practices. It will also offer services such as physiotherapy and sessions led by dietitians, contributing to a well-rounded approach to health and wellness.

Donald Prince noted the centre’s potential impact, stating, “It’s going to meet our needs fully, once we’re up and operating. I anticipate we’re going to have really good quality care that’s going to be accessible for our people.”

Currently, the Dadzi Wellness Centre is offering limited services as it establishes its operations. Community members in Fort St. James interested in learning more about the available services can reach out via email at [email protected].

The opening of the Dadzi Wellness Centre marks a significant step towards integrating traditional Indigenous practices into healthcare, fostering a new era of holistic health for the Fort St. James community.
