The North Central Health Care Foundation successfully hosted a fundraising event, “Dancing with the Stars,” which raised over $37,000 for pediatric medical equipment at the Melfort Hospital. The event took place on November 19, 2023, at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort, drawing a crowd of over 500 attendees.

The initiative arose from discussions between emergency room nurse Dinah Olson and Dr. David Boyle, highlighting the need for improved equipment to care for pediatric patients. According to Peggy George, past chair of the North Central Health Care Foundation, the idea of a dance fundraiser emerged as an effective way to address this need. George stated, “Dinah had done a similar event in the past, and we thought it would be a great fit for what the Foundation wanted to achieve.”

The organizing committee, led by Olson and her colleague Jennifer Peterson, worked diligently to bring the event to life. They secured dancers and sponsors, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with community spirit. Participating dancers included healthcare professionals, local leaders, and their family members, showcasing a broad representation of the community’s commitment to healthcare.

The lineup featured notable pairs such as Dr. Eden Strydom and Olson, along with Melfort MLA Todd Goudy and his partner Tannis Goudy. The event also included a lively group dance by nursing staff to Dolly Parton’s iconic song “9 to 5.”

The evening concluded with a presentation from the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation, which donated $37,141.89 to support the North Central Health Care Foundation’s efforts. The Judges’ Choice Award went to Dr. Danielle Desjardins and Brian Farley, while the People’s Choice Award was given to Dr. Robert Steffan and Evie Steffan, further enhancing the competitive spirit of the night.

George emphasized the significance of community involvement, stating, “Everyone who participated knows about healthcare and cares about the work that the Foundation does.” This sentiment was echoed by the diverse range of participants, which included not only medical professionals but also local figures like Doug Kurtenbach, a former member of the Foundation board.

Choreography for the dancers was primarily handled by Chisa Glendenning, with Bree Tallon of Dancers Edge overseeing the nurses’ group dance. George expressed her amazement at the event’s success, describing the atmosphere as one of joy and celebration. “It was just a royal treatment for all of the guests and dancers,” she remarked.

The event’s format surprised attendees, with each dancer performing unique routines instead of a standardized performance. George noted the unexpected diversity in choreography and music, which contributed to the overall enjoyment. “The look of fun and happiness on their faces is etched in my brain,” she said, highlighting the dedication and effort each participant put into the event.

The collaboration between the North Central Health Care Foundation and the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation exemplifies the spirit of community support in healthcare. This partnership not only provided financial assistance but also demonstrated a shared commitment to improving pediatric care across the region.

George reflected on the importance of these fundraising efforts, especially in a challenging financial climate for healthcare foundations. She expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, “When another foundation steps up to the plate and supports another foundation, it’s a beautiful gesture.”

The success of the fundraiser sets a positive precedent for future events aimed at enhancing healthcare resources. The North Central Health Care Foundation continues to seek innovative ways to engage the community while addressing critical healthcare needs.
