Stettler Clinics Welcome 3,000 New Patients Amid Physician Surge
Stettler’s healthcare landscape has improved dramatically, with local clinics now accepting approximately 3,000 new patients. Over the past year, the town has experienced a significant shift in its physician availability, growing from six doctors across two medical clinics to five additional doctors currently in practice, along with a nurse practitioner.
This transformation stems from the dedicated efforts of the Stettler Health Care Attraction and Retention Committee, which has successfully addressed the community’s physician shortage. The past year saw the Stettler Hospital and Care Centre’s emergency department occasionally close, leaving many residents without access to a family doctor. Now, with the newly recruited medical professionals, the community is on track to have a total of around 14 physicians once all are fully operational.
According to Byron Geddes, executive director of the Stettler Regional Board of Trade, the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders have been crucial in attracting new talent. “It’s not one person; it’s the sum of the parts,” he stated. “We have some really good people involved, and because of our success, we’re getting attention.”
New Opportunities for Patients
With the influx of new doctors, the patient capacity in Stettler has increased significantly. Currently, eight physicians are practicing at the Heartland Medical Clinic, with Doctors Onwurzurike, Asuke, and Kankam-Yeboah actively accepting new patients. Meanwhile, the Stettler Medical Clinic is home to six physicians and nurse practitioner Jody Thomas, with Doctors Ude and Lawal also taking on new patients.
The anticipated arrival of additional physicians will further expand the community’s capacity by an estimated 500 to 700 patients per new doctor. As a result, the total number of available patient spaces will significantly rise, providing much-needed relief to residents.
The Stettler Medical Clinic has also begun operating as a walk-in clinic, allowing patients to receive same-day consultations. This initiative alleviates pressure from the emergency department, ensuring that residents can access timely medical care. Geddes highlighted the commitment of local doctors, noting, “There are doctors with really huge patient loads, but they really go out of their way to make sure everyone is looked after.”
Community Collaboration and Support
The partnership between the town and county has played a vital role in the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals. Various incentives were established to attract physicians to the area, addressing a critical gap that many communities across Alberta are facing. Geddes pointed out that around 160 communities in the province struggle with similar healthcare shortages, emphasizing the importance of local initiatives.
“When it comes to healthcare, we all play a part in our own way, and that’s the only way you make it work as a community,” Geddes remarked. “At the end of the day, we’ll do whatever we need to ensure that the roles in our community are filled.”
As Stettler continues to enhance its healthcare services, the collaborative efforts of local organizations and residents are proving essential in overcoming previous challenges. With a growing number of healthcare providers, the community is better equipped to meet the medical needs of its population.
