Abbotsford Woman’s Charity Seeks Renovation to Expand Outreach

Louise Burns, a dedicated community activist in Abbotsford, British Columbia, is seeking to renovate her home in order to enhance her efforts to feed vulnerable populations in the Fraser Valley. Over the years, what began as a solitary mission has transformed into a collaborative operation involving numerous volunteers and local organizations. To sustain and potentially expand her charitable work, Burns requires significant renovations to her current setup.

Duston DeHart, who has known Burns for several years, is leading the renovation project. He highlighted the necessity of creating a dedicated workspace in Burns’ garage, stating, “She is working out of her house right now, so her home is completely taken over.” The aim is to provide Burns with a space where she can unwind after long days of service, rather than constantly tidying her home.

The renovation will facilitate the preparation of over 1,500 sandwiches distributed each week. This dedicated workspace will not only declutter her home but also streamline the process, allowing for increased production. Jeannette Boxall, a volunteer who has been with Burns since meeting her at another charity three years ago, emphasized the impact Burns has had on the community, noting, “Pretty much every group in Abbotsford will come through or know her and what she’s doing.”

Amanda Shank, a beneficiary of Burns’ charitable work, shared her personal journey. “I was homeless on the streets when I first met Louise about seven and a half years ago,” she recounted. Shank credits Burns for providing food during her most challenging times, stating, “If it wasn’t for her, half of the time I wouldn’t have had any food.” Today, Shank contributes to the sandwich-making operation, feeling a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to give back.

Burns has garnered recognition for her efforts, receiving the 2022 Community Builders’ Award from Archway Community Services. She collaborates with various local businesses, including Save-On Foods, to gather food donations seven days a week. Other contributors include Wagner Hills recovery centre, Costco, and The Salvation Army. Once these donations are collected, they are distributed to those in need through partnerships with organizations such as SARA for Women and Union Gospel Mission.

As Burns reflects on her journey, she envisions expanding her outreach efforts. “For a while, I was giving people furniture,” she noted. Burns had previously assisted Ukrainian families affected by the war, helping them secure fully furnished homes. She acknowledges that while the influx of Ukrainian refugees has decreased, there remains a significant demand for such services locally.

DeHart’s online fundraiser aims to raise $7,000 to support the renovation project. While the construction work will be undertaken by volunteers at no cost, DeHart is seeking public donations to cover essential supplies. He hopes local suppliers will provide discounts or donations for materials needed, including cabinets, countertops, plumbing fixtures, and commercial-grade appliances.

The fundraiser can be accessed at gofundme.com/f/help-louise-build-a-kitchen-to-feed-our-homeless-community. With the community’s help, Burns hopes to enhance her capacity to serve those in need, continuing her mission to support the vulnerable populations of the Fraser Valley.
