Mary Popowich, a cherished matriarch and devoted wife of the late William Popowich, passed away on January 27, 2026, at the age of 99. Her family announced her passing with deep sadness, noting her significant influence in the lives of many throughout her long life in Yorkton.

Born on July 10, 1926, in the Good Spirit area, Mary was the daughter of John and Extima Drabiuk (née Skwarchuk). Growing up on a farm during the challenging 1920s and 1930s, she learned the values of hard work and resilience from an early age. Contributing to the family farm, she honed skills in cooking, knitting, and sewing while also working for neighbors to support her family financially.

During the 1940s, her eldest brother, Bill, took her to British Columbia, where she met her future husband, William Popowich. The couple celebrated their marriage on November 17, 1946, and established a farm north of Springside. They worked the land for nearly four decades before retiring in 1983 and moving to Yorkton.

As a dedicated homemaker and mother, Mary raised two children, Donald and Adeline, while actively participating in the farming operation. Her responsibilities included hauling and stacking thousands of square alfalfa bales, milking cows, and managing the family’s dairy production. Mary’s connection to the land extended to her love for animals, as she raised various livestock and cherished her roosters, which served as her early morning alarm.

Mary’s home was a reflection of her vibrant personality, adorned with beautiful gardens and a collection of rooster-themed decorations that brought her joy. Renowned for her exceptional cooking and baking, she was often sought after to lead culinary efforts at weddings and community events. Her gardens were meticulously maintained, showcasing her dedication to gardening.

Beyond her many talents, Mary was known for her sharp intelligence and remarkable memory. She could easily recall names and birthdays of friends and family, and her sense of humor endeared her to those around her. Her greatest joy came from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who experienced her warmth and love in a manner that was uniquely special.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, William; her daughter, Adeline; and several siblings and in-laws. She is survived by her son, Don Popowich (Joan), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a son-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service took place on February 3, 2026, at the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church, where the Very Reverend Archpriest Michael Faryna officiated. Family members, including Don Popowich and Ron Steranko, delivered heartfelt eulogies. Following the service, Mary was laid to rest at the Yorkton City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Mary’s memory to the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church or to a charity of choice. Condolences may be left for the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

Her legacy of love and laughter will be remembered by all who knew her. Вічная Пам’ять – Eternal Memory.
