Community Unites for Coldest Night Walk to Fight Homelessness

The Island Crisis Care Society is gearing up for its annual fundraising event, the Coldest Night of the Year walk, which will take place on February 28, 2026, in Nanaimo. This event aims to raise both funds and awareness about the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness. Participants will gather at John Barsby Secondary School to walk either a 2-kilometre or 5-kilometre route, with an ambitious fundraising target of $125,000.

Building Community Support

Jennifer Short, the development and communications manager for the society, expressed excitement about the event marking its 15th year in Nanaimo. She highlighted that the funds raised will go directly into the community impact fund, which provides essential support to clients in need. “All the money raised from the Coldest Night goes into our community impact fund,” Short said. “It’s a flexible fund that allows us to respond to various barriers our clients face.”

Financial assistance may cover necessities such as B.C. Hydro bills, work boots, or bus passes. Short emphasized the importance of these funds, noting, “We are really fortunate to receive funding from B.C. Housing and Island Health, but there are limits to what they can support. The Coldest Night and our community impact fund fill that gap, ensuring our clients have the resources they need to succeed.”

This walk is part of a nationwide initiative that has also begun expanding into the United States. Importantly, all funds raised remain within the community where they were generated. Participants can sign up to walk without making a donation, although many choose to fundraise through various methods. Teams often form for both walking and fundraising, enhancing community involvement.

Incentives and Community Engagement

Individuals who wish to participate can enjoy various incentives. Those over 18 who raise more than $150 and teens or children under 18 who raise over $75 will receive a Coldest Night of the Year toque. Additionally, the first 300 donors across Canada who raise $500 will receive a special hoodie, with Nanaimo set to distribute nine this year. As of February 11, the event had already raised $54,000 toward its goal.

In 2025, the walk attracted 412 participants, which Short noted is consistent with average attendance for the event. Registration opens at 16:00, with the walk commencing at 17:00 and concluding by 19:00. After the walk, participants will be treated to chili and a bun, offering a warm meal reminiscent of what those in need might receive at food programs.

“The Coldest Night is such a key fundraiser for us,” Short reflected. “It allows us to do the important work we do. Everyone’s journey is different, and we often don’t know what challenges someone might face from one day to the next.”
