Demand for Food Bank Surges Amid Shelter Shortage in St. John’s

The Salvation Army in St. John’s is experiencing unprecedented demand for its services as winter conditions worsen. The organization has reported a significant increase in the number of individuals seeking assistance, leading to a shortage of available shelter beds. During the past year, the food bank alone registered 1,835 new users, highlighting the growing need for support in the community.

At a recent open house event at the Ches Penney Centre of Hope, located on Springdale Street, Pam Goodyear, divisional secretary for public relations, expressed concern over the rising numbers. “We’re seeing a constant increase in the number of people coming looking for assistance. Our food bank numbers are increasing on a daily basis,” Goodyear stated.

The centre provides a variety of services, including free meals, supportive housing, counselling, and skills training. Despite these offerings, the demand for shelter remains overwhelming. The Salvation Army operates 22 shelter beds at a nearby facility, but only 17 of those are currently available, and they are often at capacity. According to Carolyn Reid, executive director of housing and community services, the organization has had to turn people away due to lack of space. “It’s sad when there’s no room left, but we do what we can, giving out blankets and other necessities,” Reid explained.

The situation is dire, with between 480 to 500 people experiencing homelessness in St. John’s each month. Doug Pawson from End Homelessness St. John’s reported that the number of individuals facing homelessness has increased by approximately 120 compared to the previous December. Many are sleeping outside in the harsh winter conditions, often hesitant to seek shelter due to safety concerns.

Reid emphasized the urgency of addressing this crisis, stating that more supportive housing options are “desperately” needed. The Salvation Army is actively collaborating with community partners, including Newfoundland and Labrador Housing, to formulate extreme weather protocols and explore additional solutions.

In light of these challenges, the community is coming together to find ways to support those in need. The Salvation Army encourages residents to contribute to their food bank and shelter programs as the demand continues to grow.

As winter progresses, the need for immediate action and support in St. John’s remains critical. The Salvation Army and its partners are committed to doing everything possible to provide assistance to those facing hardship, but the need for further resources and community involvement is more pressing than ever.
