In a notable achievement for the education community, Kara Frey, a teacher with a strong connection to Eagle Butte High School, has been awarded the esteemed Book Love Foundation Grant. She is one of only 40 recipients across North America to receive this recognition, which underscores her dedication to fostering a love for reading among her students.
Currently serving as an instructor at Great Plains College in Maple Creek, Frey has a rich history in the region, having previously taught at Eagle Butte. Her journey in education has been shaped by a network of supportive local educators, including Jennifer Konzack, Mark Heinricks, Cammie Kannekans, Heather Laturnas, and Colleen Andjelic, who have inspired her throughout her career.
Grant Highlights and Future Plans
The Book Love Foundation Grant is awarded to educators who demonstrate a remarkable commitment to creating authentic reading experiences. In a statement following the announcement, Frey expressed her gratitude and highlighted that she is the only college-level instructor among this year’s awardees. The grant funds will be directed toward diversifying her classroom library, ensuring that her students have access to a wide range of reading materials.
In addition to the Book Love Foundation Grant, Frey has also received the First Book Canada & BMO Reads for the Future Grant. This initiative aims to enhance access to books that reflect diverse identities and experiences, further supporting her mission to provide inclusive reading opportunities for adult learners at Great Plains College.
Looking ahead, Frey is scheduled to present at the upcoming Hawaii International Conference on Education. Her session, titled The Joy of Reading: Cultivating Lifelong Readers – Advanced Strategies for College and Senior High School Educators, will delve into effective literacy instruction methods and the promotion of lifelong reading habits among students.
Kara Frey’s achievements and her commitment to education exemplify the vital role that dedicated teachers play in shaping the future of literacy and learning.
