Students at S. Bruce Smith School in West Edmonton observed Black History Month on February 28, 2024, by engaging in a series of cultural performances that highlighted music, dance, and education. The event featured a traditional Zimbabwean marimba performance by the Izwi Lethu Arts Society, made possible through a partnership with the Africa Centre.

Tawa Nzekwu, the youth programs manager at the Africa Centre, emphasized the significance of the event. “Today it’s all about honouring the excellence of Black people,” Nzekwu stated. “It’s about honouring Black excellence in our community and engaging youth in teaching them about Black history.”

The Africa Centre, a non-profit organization based in Edmonton, runs various programs for youth and adults throughout the year. Special initiatives for Black History Month include interactive events and workshops aimed at fostering community engagement and cultural appreciation.

On March 3, 2024, the Africa Centre will host the Black Brilliance Youth Chess and STEM Challenge, inviting youths aged seven to seventeen for a day focused on “strategy and innovation.” In addition, the organization offers free marimba workshops for all ages every Saturday from 14:00 to 17:00 until the end of the month.

Nzekwu further elaborated on the importance of inclusivity in these educational efforts. “It’s very important to get involved, not just Black kids … because you’re not just educating them, you’re letting them feel what it feels like to be in those spaces,” he added. “Being Black doesn’t stop at Black History Month. It extends beyond.”

Through these initiatives, the Africa Centre aims not only to educate but also to cultivate an appreciation for Black culture and history among a diverse audience. By providing opportunities for cultural immersion, the organization hopes to foster a sense of belonging and understanding across the community.

The performances at S. Bruce Smith School serve as a reminder of the rich history and contributions of Black individuals, encouraging students to continue exploring and celebrating this heritage throughout the year.
