Flagg Township Museum Hosts Events for 250th Anniversary Celebration
The Flagg Township Museum in Rochelle is launching a series of engaging events in January to commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. This celebration aligns with the United States’ semiquincentennial, a milestone that marks the rich history of American freedoms. The museum is set to provide an array of festive activities designed to warmly welcome visitors despite the winter chill.
On January 18, the museum will celebrate World Snow Day with a variety of snow-themed activities. Visitors can partake in fun winter experiences, including creating giant snowflakes, engaging in snowball tosses, and even participating in snowball fights. In keeping with the patriotic spirit of the upcoming anniversary, the museum will incorporate red, white, and blue themes into the day’s events. Attendees can also enjoy seasonal treats to warm up during the festivities.
Following World Snow Day, the museum will host Museum Selfie Day on January 22. Although this event officially takes place on January 21, the museum will celebrate on the following Thursday, which is also a free admission day. Guests are encouraged to take selfies both outside and inside the museum from 11:00 to 16:00. To enhance the experience, the museum will provide red, white, and blue accessories for visitors to use in their photographs, creating a memorable keepsake in honor of the 250th anniversary.
The month will conclude with “Cocoa for Our Cause” on January 31, a mini-fundraiser aimed at supporting the museum’s initiatives. For a nominal fee of $2, visitors can enjoy a cup of cocoa with various special toppings, or for $5, they can purchase a mug filled with cocoa to take home. The cocoa will feature red, white, and blue sprinkles, adding a festive touch to this community event.
In addition to these celebrations, attendees can explore the exhibit in the Cabinet of Curiosities, titled “Founding Fathers and Mothers.” This display highlights local founders and narrates the history of Rochelle, offering insights into the community’s past.
The mission of the Flagg Township Historical Society and Museum is to promote interest in the history of Flagg Township through education, research, and the preservation of historical information. These January events not only celebrate the rich heritage of the area but also engage the public in a meaningful way as the nation prepares for a significant anniversary.
