A new initiative in Sudbury, Ontario, is bringing free cooking classes to seniors in the deaf community. Launched this month by the Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf in partnership with the Northern Ontario Association for the Deaf, the classes utilize both American Sign Language (ASL) and Quebec Sign Language (LSQ) to promote inclusivity and engagement among participants.

Derek Rumball, president of the Bob Rumball Centre, emphasized the importance of community connection. “The really important part would be the fellowship, the social part of it, the engagement of our community,” he stated. Participants have traveled up to an hour and a half to join this unique opportunity, highlighting the demand for such inclusive programs within the area.

Beverly Sheppard, one of the class attendees, expressed her enthusiasm for the experience. “I’m just really proud that as a group of deaf individuals, we can show the community that we have a deaf community center here, and that we are engaged and inclusive to all the deaf community,” she said.

Community Support and Funding

The Sudbury Community Foundation played a crucial role in launching these classes by providing funding through its community grant cycle. According to Shelley Lachepelle, executive director of the foundation, successful applicants can receive up to $5,000. “Last year, we were able to support 15 different funded projects, this project being one,” Lachepelle noted. “We’re thrilled to see it in action and observe all the participants working together.”

The grant enabled the Bob Rumball Centre to acquire essential kitchen equipment. Natalie Lamondin, director of community services programs, shared that the centre started from scratch. “We were able to buy all the necessities to run a kitchen, because there were no utensils, there was nothing,” she explained, emphasizing the effort put into building a functional and safe kitchen environment.

Visibility and communication are critical in these classes, according to Patricia Grenier, president of the deaf association. “As a deaf community, we’re very visual,” she stated. “We need to have people within our sight lines.” The kitchen’s design allows participants to gather around a central island, fostering better communication and collaboration.

Impact on Mental Health and Community Engagement

The response to the cooking classes has been overwhelmingly positive, with an average of 15 to 20 participants attending each session. Grenier observed that these classes play a vital role in combating isolation. “For the longest time, there weren’t events that the deaf community could really be involved in,” she remarked. “Mental health has gotten better. People feel less isolated because they can come here and have a space to hang out and socialize.”

The classes are scheduled to be offered once a month, with plans for themed cooking nights in the future, allowing for even greater community interaction. The initiative demonstrates a commitment to creating a welcoming environment for seniors in the deaf community and highlights the importance of social engagement in enhancing overall well-being.

For those interested in joining, the Bob Rumball Centre continues to encourage participation, ensuring that every session not only provides culinary skills but also fosters a sense of belonging among its members.
