Golden Mile Centre Celebrates Grand Opening in Sault Ste. Marie
The Golden Mile Centre officially opened its doors in Sault Ste. Marie on January 19, 1976, marking a significant milestone in the community’s development. This new shopping destination, located at 77 Great Northern Road, celebrated its grand opening with a series of events scheduled from January 19 to January 24.
Among the notable tenants of the Golden Mile Centre are the Scandinavian Ski Shop, Family Amusement Centre, Golden Mile Pinto, Pizza Delight, House of Cheese (La Casa del Formaggio), and Noah’s Ark Pet Shop. This diverse mix of businesses aims to cater to the varied interests of the local community, enhancing shopping and entertainment options in the area.
The opening festivities included a testimonial banquet honoring Lee Rodgers Sr., a respected figure in the community. The event took place at the Hall of Fame Lounge at Memorial Gardens and was attended by former members of the L.G. Rodgers Red Caps softball team, including Jack Thibeault, Jim Sandvik, Norman Baker, Einar Sandvik, and Lawrence Baker. This gathering not only celebrated the centre’s opening but also acknowledged the contributions of local sports figures.
The Golden Mile Centre is expected to become a central hub for shopping and community events. Its opening comes at a time when Sault Ste. Marie is experiencing growth and development, and the addition of this centre is seen as a positive step forward for the local economy.
In related news, the Royal Canadian Mint recently advised the federal government to retain the one-cent coin, as reported on January 17, 2001. This recommendation was based on findings from an Ottawa consulting firm, highlighting ongoing discussions regarding currency management in Canada.
The community continues to thrive with various initiatives, including cultural and entertainment offerings. Over the Rainbow Children’s Entertainment, launched in 1993, has successfully brought around two dozen acts to Sault Ste. Marie, although it currently faces challenges due to a shortage of volunteers.
As Sault Ste. Marie evolves, the Golden Mile Centre stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to fostering a vibrant community through enhanced shopping experiences and local engagement.
