Hellenic Community Celebrates 100 Years at Holy Trinity Church

The Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal gathered on March 15, 2024, at the historic Holy Trinity Church site to launch a year of celebrations marking over a century of Greek presence in Quebec. The event took place at a modern hotel that now surrounds the preserved stone wall of the original church, which remains a significant symbol of the community’s rich heritage.

Community leaders addressed attendees in a poignant ceremony that paid tribute to the pioneers who established the Greek diaspora in the region. The gathering, surrounded by the original stones from the Holy Trinity Church, served as a reminder of the humble beginnings of a vibrant community that started in a modest basement.

Basile Angelopoulos, president of the Hellenic Community, encouraged attendees to reflect on the aspirations of early immigrants who congregated at the first church established in 1906 on Saint Lawrence Boulevard. He posed a thought-provoking question: “Could they have ever dreamed that that little community they created… would grow to include trilingual day schools and six Greek Orthodox churches?”

The community has evolved significantly since its inception, now offering educational programs across five campuses. The organizing committee announced a series of cultural events aimed at integrating Hellenic heritage into the broader Montreal community.

Justine Frangouli-Argyris, president of the anniversary committee, shared an enthusiastic vision for the celebrations. “It’s going to be like a Zorba dance,” she remarked, highlighting plans that will engage both the Greek population and the wider public. This vision extends beyond the city, aiming to encompass areas from Laval to the South Shore.

George Tsantrizos, director general of the organization, reaffirmed the commitment to the values upheld by the early immigrants. “We want to assure them that we have remained faithful to their mission to serve the Greek community of Quebec,” Tsantrizos stated, underscoring a dedication to preserving their legacy.

The event concluded with a press conference, allowing media representatives to pose questions to the community leaders. This anniversary marks not only a celebration of the past but also a commitment to the future of the Hellenic Community in Quebec, ensuring that the contributions of its founders are recognized and remembered.
