After four decades of providing footwear for children, the Kiddie Kobbler store on St. Laurent Boulevard in Ottawa is set to close its doors as owner Robert “The Shoeman” Krantzberg prepares for retirement at the end of March 2024. Krantzberg announced his decision to retire during an interview with CBC Radio, citing the physical toll of running the store. “I love what I do, people see me happy, I’m here every day,” he explained. “But at this age right now, I’m starting to feel the aches and pains. The hours are long, and I feel like I’d like to just, you know, maybe take a step back.”

Reflecting on his journey, Krantzberg shared that he began his career at a Kiddie Kobbler location in Montreal as a teenager, eventually owning his first store at the age of 19.
