Magic Wand Project Celebrates 25 Years of Supporting Graduates

The Magic Wand Project in Greater Victoria marks its 25th anniversary this year, continuing its mission to provide essential attire for graduating students. Founder Elizabeth Surerus is inviting the latest graduating class to explore a diverse collection of dresses, tuxedos, shoes, bags, and accessories available for their graduation ceremonies.

Established in 2001, the Magic Wand Project was inspired by similar initiatives in Vancouver. Surerus recognized a gap in Victoria, stating, “I thought we didn’t have anything in Victoria such as that, and decided it was important.” To address the issue of financial barriers, she began collecting formal wear to ensure that all students could participate in graduation celebrations without economic constraints.

Supporting Graduation Dreams

Now located in a home in Saanich’s Gordon Head neighbourhood, the Magic Wand Project boasts over 100 dresses and between 40 and 50 suits and tuxedos, complemented by various accessories. While the initiative was designed with financially challenged students in mind, any student is welcome to take advantage of the offerings. Surerus encapsulates the program’s philosophy with her slogan: “Why buy when you can borrow.” Items are provided for a small fee, promoting the importance of reusing outfits to reduce waste.

The community’s support has been pivotal to the project’s success, with a steady stream of donations and volunteers ensuring its sustainability. Currently, Surerus has indicated that the collection is sufficient, and the project is not accepting additional donations at this time. She expressed gratitude for the community’s contributions, stating, “The community is wonderful for offering, and then they’re very appreciative when they can come and find something.”

Impact Over the Years

The Magic Wand Project typically serves between 50 and 60 students annually, and it has facilitated graduation ceremonies for more than 1,600 students since its inception. Over the past two and a half decades, Surerus has consistently received positive feedback from students and parents. One student reflected, “Thanks to the Magic Wand, I had an unforgettable graduation,” highlighting the emotional impact of the project on individuals and families.
