Each year, Manitobans come together for the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, an event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the Alzheimer Society. This initiative supports families impacted by dementia, providing essential resources and guidance as they navigate their journeys. Walks are scheduled across Manitoba this May and June, inviting community members to participate and show solidarity.

Personal Stories Fuel the Purpose

The Walk draws a diverse group of participants, from seasoned walkers to first-timers, each motivated by personal connections to dementia. Chelsea Bernhard has been walking in memory of her mother for over a decade. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at just 48 years old, Chelsea faced uncertainty in her early 30s. “The support from the Society helped guide us through the next steps,” she recalls. Today, Chelsea walks alongside her colleagues from Comforts of Home – Care, where she dedicates her work to supporting individuals living with dementia.

For Chelsea and her team, participating in the Walk provides a meaningful break from their routine. “Walking as a team gives us time to connect, reflect, and remember why our work matters,” she explains. The event becomes a way to give back while raising funds that directly benefit families affected by dementia.

A Day of Connection and Hope

The Walk also fosters family traditions. Chelsea’s daughter has been involved since childhood, enjoying activities like decorating their sign and bringing her grandmother’s picture. “There’s music, face painting, and so much joy,” Chelsea adds, highlighting the event’s festive atmosphere.

Another dedicated participant, Gary Garbutt, finds the Walk to be one of the highlights of his year. He walks alongside his wife, children, grandchildren, and even family pets. Gary appreciates the social connections that the event fosters. Over the years, he has become a familiar face on the route, greeted by high-fives and warm smiles from fellow participants. “It’s inspiring,” he shares. “You see all those people and you think, ‘wow, there’s a lot of support out there.’”

Living with Alzheimer’s has brought changes to Gary’s life, but the support he receives from the Society has been invaluable. “My weekly support group meetings have become my happy place,” he says, emphasizing the importance of community among those facing similar challenges.

The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s transcends a mere fundraising event; it symbolizes a united front for the dementia community. Participants come together to connect, celebrate, and demonstrate that no one facing dementia is alone. With walks scheduled across Manitoba, the initiative aims to mobilize thousands in support of families affected by dementia.

Funds raised through the Walk are crucial for ensuring families have access to education, support groups, and counselling throughout their dementia journey. Those interested in joining Chelsea, Gary, and countless others are encouraged to register, whether as individuals, teams from their workplaces, or groups of friends. Every step taken is a step towards awareness and support.
