Kierra Lebreton, a Grade 12 student at the Cowichan Valley Open Learning Co-Op (CVOLC), has been named the Rotary Club of Duncan’s Student of the Month for December 2023. This recognition highlights her significant contributions to the school’s culinary arts program and her supportive role within the school community.

Principal Venessa MacDowell praised Lebreton for her positive and independent nature. “Kierra is positive, supportive, independent, and wise. She embraces every learning opportunity and inspires those around her with her dedication and kindness,” MacDowell stated. This award not only reflects her academic achievements but also her commitment to fostering a nurturing environment for her peers and teachers.

Community Engagement Through Culinary Arts

Lebreton exemplifies leadership and community spirit by actively participating in the culinary arts program. Every Tuesday and Wednesday, she collaborates with classmates to prepare meals for the entire school, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This initiative not only brings students together but also underscores her genuine care for the school community.

In her future endeavors, Lebreton is considering pursuing post-secondary education in the trades, furthering her commitment to personal growth and community service.

The award presentation took place on December 15, 2023, where Bob Cairns, President of the Rotary Club of Duncan, expressed pride in honoring Lebreton. “The Rotary Club of Duncan is proud to name Kierra as its December Student of the Month,” Cairns remarked, emphasizing the club’s dedication to recognizing outstanding students who contribute positively to their communities.

Established in 1930, the Rotary Club of Duncan aims to enrich the lives of community members and support those in need. By acknowledging students like Kierra Lebreton, the club continues its mission to foster leadership and service among young individuals.
