Toronto Lawyer James Hirsh Triumphs on Jeopardy! with Historic Win
Toronto lawyer James Hirsh captivated television audiences this week as he became the latest contestant to win on the iconic game show Jeopardy! His triumph marks a significant achievement not just for him but also for Canadian participants on the renowned American quiz show. Hirsh, who co-hosts the long-running Menschwarmers podcast, described the experience as “the thrill of a lifetime.”
Hirsh’s journey to the podium began when he was selected to compete at the Alex Trebek studio in Culver City, California, part of the Sony Pictures lot. He taped several episodes about three weeks before the episodes aired on February 24, 2026. Keeping his results a secret until the show premiered was a challenge, as millions tuned in to watch him and his fellow contestants battle it out.
A Journey Rooted in Passion
Hirsh’s love for trivia began in his youth. As a teenager, he was the reigning champion at his summer camp’s Jeopardy! version, winning modest prizes like enough cash to buy some beers after camp. This time, his winnings on Jeopardy! will contribute significantly towards paying off his family’s mortgage. Beyond the financial rewards, he also received a custom Jeopardy! hat and tote bag, but the most cherished prize for him is the ability to say, “I was on Jeopardy!”
During a recent episode of The CJN’s North Star podcast, host Ellin Bessner interviewed Hirsh about his experience. He shared insights into the pressure and excitement of being under the bright lights of the game show stage, revealing that he was quite nervous, especially while competing against seasoned players.
Preparation Meets Opportunity
Hirsh credited his preparation to decades of watching Jeopardy! and honing his trivia skills. As a child, he often watched the show with his mother, who was a fan of Wheel of Fortune. After applying to be a contestant in 2011, he did not hear back until the show moved to its new testing format during the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed aspiring contestants to take the qualifying test at their convenience.
While he attended the taping alone, Hirsh’s family watched from home. “It was a little difficult to get everyone down there,” he explained. Although contestants cover their own travel expenses, runners-up receive a cash prize, which can help offset costs. This financial incentive made his participation more feasible.
The tension of the game was palpable. Hirsh noted that he felt particularly nervous while wearing uncomfortable shoes that led to blisters, which he humorously regretted. As he stood behind the podium, the pressure to perform was immense, but he managed to find his flow during the game.
Hirsh’s experience illustrates the unexpected challenges contestants face. “I should have brought something more comfortable,” he admitted, reflecting on the physical discomfort that accompanied the thrill of competition.
Winning Strategy and Memorable Moments
Throughout the competition, Hirsh faced numerous challenging questions, but his preparation paid off. He successfully answered a question about the ten lost tribes of Israel, showcasing how his background had come into play. “I definitely think that some Jewish education helped with that,” he remarked.
As the game progressed, Hirsh found himself in a position to leverage his knowledge of sports and geography. Notably, he answered a question about the Montreal Canadiens, earning significant points and eventually leading to a pivotal Daily Double that turned the tide in his favor.
Reflecting on the experience, Hirsh expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete on such a prestigious platform. “It was a wonderful experience,” he said. “I was so lucky to have been called and to be able to be part of it.” His victory not only marks a personal achievement but also adds to the legacy of Canadian contestants on Jeopardy!
Looking ahead, Hirsh is open to the possibility of returning for special tournaments like the Tournament of Champions, which has expanded to include more contestants since removing the five-game cap. “I would welcome the opportunity to do more in the future,” he said, hinting that his journey with Jeopardy! may not be over yet.
As he continues to navigate his career as a lawyer and podcast host, Hirsh’s recent achievement serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of passion and perseverance in pursuing one’s dreams.
