Urgent Call to Support LGBTQ+ Organizations Amid Financial Crisis

Across Canada, LGBTQ+ organizations are confronting a severe financial crisis that threatens the essential services they provide. Charities like Kind Space in Ottawa and the Ten Oaks Project, which support vulnerable queer individuals, are experiencing unprecedented challenges. “Without help, staff will be laid off and services will be cut,” warned Fae Johnstone, executive director of Queer Momentum. “LGBTQ+ people will be left without critical supports.” This dire situation reflects a broader trend seen across the nation, as organizations like LGBT YouthLine, one of Canada’s oldest LGBTQ+ youth charities, also face immense financial pressures.

Yet, the landscape has shifted dramatically. Reports indicate a staggering 388% increase in hate-motivated violence targeting LGBTQ+ individuals between 2016 and 2023. This alarming trend, coupled with rising living costs and a withdrawal of corporate support, has left many organizations on the brink of collapse. “I know of at least two organizations in Atlantic Canada that will soon be cutting staff if nothing changes,” added Johnstone.
