Vintage Snowmobile Races Set to Boost Community Charity Efforts

The Prince Albert Snow Pirates are gearing up for their annual vintage drag races on February 28, with a portion of the proceeds designated for community support. This popular event, now in its fourth year, showcases snowmobiles from 1981 and earlier as they compete in timed races, drawing participants and spectators from across the region.

Event organizer Vanessa Brahniuk noted that the races have previously attracted up to 200 racers and a diverse audience of all ages. “We’ve had a lot of spectators, young and old. There are three, maybe four other races around Saskatchewan, but they are mostly down south,” Brahniuk explained.

Timeless Races with a Charitable Twist

The vintage drag races stand out due to their strict eligibility criteria. All competing snowmobiles must have engines and chassis from 1981 or before. Each machine will undergo inspection before the races begin, and participants will be divided into different classes based on age and engine type. A concession stand, featuring a 50/50 draw, will also be available on-site.

As part of the event’s tradition, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local charity, with this year’s beneficiary being the Rose Garden Hospice. Brahniuk emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “We don’t need a lot of profit for our club. We just need the funds to get it started, which we go to a lot of local businesses in Prince Albert, and they donate to the race knowing that a portion of the proceeds will go back to the Rose Garden Hospice. It’s a win-win for everybody.”

Future Plans and Community Involvement

Brahniuk, whose family has been involved in snowmobiling for three generations, expressed aspirations to expand the event into a two-day competition that could include oval racing in the future. “We have talked about doing oval races; I’m not sure what that’s going to look like. There are a couple down south that do that already,” she said.
