AI Technology Shapes Recent US-Israel-Iran Military Actions

The ongoing military tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran have seen unprecedented use of artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze intelligence and select targets. AI technology has reportedly played a significant role in recent operations, including Israeli actions in Gaza and the U.S. raid targeting Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. While the exact applications of AI in these scenarios remain unverified, experts suggest that it has been instrumental in guiding numerous strikes on Iranian sites since February 28, 2023.

According to Laure de Roucy-Rochegonde from the French Institute for International Relations (IFRI), “every military power of any significance invests hugely in military applications of AI.” She noted that almost any military function can be enhanced through AI, encompassing areas such as logistics, reconnaissance, and cybersecurity. AI technology is increasingly embedded in semi-autonomous drones and various weapon systems, enhancing operational efficiency and shortening the decision-making process known as the “kill chain.”

The Maven Smart System (MSS), developed by Palantir, is one of the tools employed by U.S. forces. This system reportedly identifies and prioritizes potential targets. Recently, integration with Anthropic‘s Claude generative AI model has improved the MSS’s detection and simulation capabilities. Despite requests for comment, neither Palantir nor Anthropic responded.

AI algorithms significantly enhance the speed and comprehensiveness of data processing. Bertrand Rondepierre, head of the French army’s AI agency AMIAD, explained that AI can analyze vast datasets derived from satellite imagery, radar, and real-time video. This capability supports military operations but raises ethical concerns regarding the extent of human oversight.

The use of AI raises critical moral and legal questions, particularly regarding accountability for military actions. The recent bombing of an Iranian school, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of 150 individuals, has sparked debate over potential miscalculations in targeting. Peter Asaro, chair of the International Committee for Robot Arms Control (ICRAC), highlighted the ambiguity of whether human operators or AI systems were responsible for the targeting errors.

“Who is responsible if something goes wrong?” Asaro questioned, emphasizing the importance of understanding the data utilized in AI targeting decisions. If AI was indeed involved, questions arise about the age and accuracy of the data used, which could lead to catastrophic misjudgments.

Despite the integration of AI in military strategies, Rondepierre insisted that systems “operating without human control” remain a concept of science fiction. In France, military commanders are deeply involved in designing and managing these systems to ensure that they maintain trust and control over AI applications. Rondepierre noted, “No military decision-maker would agree to use an AI if he didn’t have trust in and control over what it’s doing.”

This current phase marks just the beginning of AI’s military applications. Benjamin Jensen from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) envisions a long-term evolution in military planning and operations to fully leverage AI capabilities. He stated, “It’s going to take a generation for us to really figure this out,” underscoring the transformative potential of AI in military contexts.

The implications of AI in warfare are profound, not only for military strategies but also for the ethical frameworks guiding their use. As nations invest heavily in AI technology, the balance between technological advancement and moral responsibility remains a critical area of scrutiny. The world watches closely as military powers navigate these complex issues in an increasingly automated battlefield.
