Algoma University Graduate John Willinsky Appointed to Order of Canada

John Willinsky, an esteemed graduate of Algoma University, has been appointed to the Order of Canada in recognition of his significant contributions to public access to academic research. This prestigious honor was announced in December 2025 and is a testament to Willinsky’s dedication to enhancing the dissemination of knowledge through his work with the Public Knowledge Project.

The Public Knowledge Project, founded by Willinsky, is recognized as the world’s most widely adopted scholarly publishing initiative. According to a news release from Algoma University, this project aims to make scholarly research freely available, helping to democratize access to information. Willinsky’s approach underscores the importance of ensuring that vetted research reaches a broader audience.

Willinsky, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Algoma in 1974, has maintained strong connections to the Sault Ste. Marie community. Early in his career, he taught in the region, experiences that profoundly influenced his commitment to education and the open sharing of knowledge. Reflecting on his time as a school teacher, Willinsky noted, “One of the great inspirations for the Public Knowledge Project was when, as a school teacher in the 1970s, I could come by Algoma University’s Arthur A. Wishart Library on Sunday afternoons… absorbed and fascinated by what we could find in the library’s latest journals and magazines.”

The Office of the Governor General of Canada has recognized Willinsky’s efforts to promote a greater democratization of knowledge. His appointment to the Order of Canada not only honors his individual achievements but also highlights the impact of Algoma University’s alumni on local, national, and international stages.
