Canadian Wheat Research Coalition Highlights Breeding System Risks

The Canadian Wheat Research Coalition (CWRC) has released a comprehensive review, identifying significant gaps and risks within the Canadian wheat breeding innovation system. Conducted by Synthesis Agri-Food Network, the study involved an analysis of various reports and interviews with 29 key stakeholders in the industry.

Jocelyn Velestuk, chair of the CWRC, stated that the review underscored three critical findings about the current wheat breeding landscape in Western Canada. Firstly, the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) wheat breeding program plays a vital role in developing wheat varieties in the region. Secondly, recent budget cuts pose a serious risk to the wheat breeding system, particularly affecting the variety development and pre-market evaluation stages. Lastly, since wheat breeding is a long-term endeavor, decisions made today will have lasting impacts on agriculture for decades to come.

“It’s clear that the status quo is not a viable path forward,” Velestuk remarked. “Our system has been incredibly productive for farmers and for the sector, but it’s no longer working. Securing the future of wheat in Canada requires a reimagining of our wheat breeding innovation system.”

The CWRC is actively seeking solutions to enhance Canada’s wheat breeding framework. Ongoing discussions with the AAFC aim to engage all stakeholders in the process. Investment from farmers in wheat breeding has yielded notable returns; a study from the University of Saskatchewan found that farmers received $33 in benefits for every dollar invested in wheat breeding from 1995 to 2020. Since 2020, the CWRC has allocated $70.5 million to Western Canadian wheat breeding initiatives.

Velestuk emphasized the commitment of Western Canadian farmers to the future of wheat breeding. “We must create a path forward that addresses research gaps, delivers field-ready varieties and protects our long-term investments,” she said.
