A recent report reveals that the financial services industry is now the most targeted sector for cyberattacks, surpassing healthcare for the first time since 2018. The financial sector faced a staggering **737 data compromises** in 2024, affecting approximately **48 million individuals**. In contrast, the healthcare sector recorded **536 compromises**, impacting around **47 million people**.

The findings come from a comprehensive analysis conducted by **Alta Technologies**, which examined data from the **Identity Theft Resource Centre**. The report highlights the growing risk faced by various industries, with financial services taking the lead in data breaches.

Data Compromises Across Industries

The report outlines a clear shift in vulnerability among industries. The financial services sector has overtaken healthcare, which previously held the top position. In 2023, the healthcare sector experienced **811 compromises**, resulting in **60 million victim notices**. This year’s decline in healthcare breaches suggests some improvement, yet the figures remain alarming.

Following financial services and healthcare, the professional services sector ranks third, with **345 reported data breaches** in 2024. This industry includes roles such as lawyers, software developers, and architects, leading to **3 million victim notices** associated with these compromises. The number of breaches in professional services has risen from **310 in 2023** and **223 in 2022**, indicating a troubling trend.

The manufacturing sector comes in fourth place, reporting **317 data compromises** that resulted in **51 million victim notices**. This represents a significant increase from the **258 breaches recorded in 2023**. Roles affected include assemblers, food processing operators, and medical appliance technicians, showcasing the range of industries now at risk.

Education ranks fifth, with **162 data breaches**, impacting **3 million individuals**. While this is a slight decrease from **173 compromises in 2023**, it underscores the ongoing risk faced by educational institutions.

Impact on Nonprofits and Technology

The nonprofit sector ranks sixth with **146 data compromises**, affecting around **2 million people**. This sector includes roles such as fundraising officers and executive directors, which are increasingly becoming targets for cybercriminals.

The technology sector follows closely with **142 data compromises** that collectively impacted a staggering **326 million individuals**. Although this marks a decrease from **167 breaches in 2023**, the scale of those affected remains concerning.

Government entities are also feeling the pressure, with **128 recorded data breaches** leading to **12 million victim notices**. This sector encompasses a variety of roles, including data entry clerks and human resources specialists. Notably, this marks one of the largest increases in cyberattacks observed since 2023, when there were **99 compromises**.

The mining and construction industries recorded **104 data breaches**, resulting in **226 million victim notices**. This dramatic rise indicates that these sectors are becoming prime targets for cyberattacks.

Finally, the retail sector rounds out the top ten with **96 data compromises**, a decrease from **118 in 2023**, yet still affecting **71 million individuals**.

The report emphasizes that while cyberattacks account for the majority of data breaches, other significant factors include system errors, human mistakes, physical attacks, and supply chain vulnerabilities. As cyber threats continue to evolve, industries must remain vigilant in their cybersecurity practices to protect sensitive information and mitigate risks.
