Health Sciences Centre Unveils Advanced Gamma Knife for Brain Surgery

The Health Sciences Centre (HSC) in Winnipeg has launched a new state-of-the-art Gamma Knife system, enhancing the facility’s capabilities in treating brain tumours and other neurological conditions. Unveiled during a joint press conference on March 4, 2024, the upgraded Elekta Esprit unit is designed to facilitate minimally invasive surgeries, offering a significant improvement in patient care.

The Gamma Knife operates using targeted gamma radiation to address a range of brain disorders, including tumours and vascular malformations. This innovative technology allows for procedures that require little to no incisions, greatly reducing the need for open surgery. According to Dr. Anthony Kaufmann, a neurosurgeon at HSC, the new system will enable patients to receive treatment with remarkable efficiency.

“With the new Esprit, patients often come in for the treatment before breakfast and return home for lunch, a dramatic change,” Dr. Kaufmann stated. He emphasized that the device shortens treatment times, enhances planning efficiency, and lessens the overall burden on patients.

Enhanced Imaging and Increased Capacity

A noteworthy feature of the Gamma Knife Esprit is its integrated CT imaging capability, which eliminates the necessity for same-day MRI scans. Dr. Kaufmann explained that this advancement will help streamline hospital services, allowing patients awaiting CT and MRI studies for other conditions to receive their examinations sooner.

The new machine also provides greater flexibility in treating larger and more complex tumours, ensuring that a wider range of patients can benefit from this advanced technology. Patients will have the option to use a custom-fitted mask during treatment to stabilize their head position, further enhancing treatment precision.

“This upgrade to Gamma Knife Esprit is really quite monumental. It’s a marvel of engineering and computing technology,” Dr. Kaufmann remarked, highlighting the significance of this enhancement in neurological care. Since the introduction of the first Gamma Knife at HSC in 2003, around 5,000 patients have benefited from this form of treatment. Today, Gamma Knife procedures account for approximately 25 percent of all brain surgeries performed in the province.

Officials anticipate that the new system will facilitate treatment for about 250 patients annually, reflecting the growing demand for advanced medical technologies in addressing complex neurological cases. The funding for the Gamma Knife was made possible through a partnership between HSC and the provincial government, underscoring the collaborative effort to improve healthcare services in the region.
